Advisor - Journey Through Alaska, Check Off That Bucket List!
Curator’s statement

Alaska has a special meaning to me because when I was seven years old, I traveled with my family and it was my first cruise. I remember it was an impact being surrounded by nature. Now after 35 years, I visited again to revive those memories.

Things to do in Alaska

Departing from Vancouver:

Embrace the fresh air on the trails, delve into Canadian culture, decipher totem pole stories and marvel at trees over 200 years old. Feel the energy exchange when you hug a tree. Traverse the suspension bridge, uncover park history and perhaps pick up souvenirs after enjoying onsite snacks or coffee.

Return to the hotel to unwind and take in the stunning views. Utilize benefits like a welcome drink or snacks and remember to schedule your spa session — a full-day circuit is highly recommended. Vancouver offers diverse attractions: the Steam Clock, gelato tasting, Stanley Park, Canada Place or a seaplane flight to Victoria.

Cruise check-in:

For your Alaska cruise, early morning check-in is advised to bypass the crowds at customs. Without prior early check-in, anticipate at least over a 35-minute wait. Onboard, savor wine from your balcony as you view the Inside Passage. Binoculars are essential — if needed, purchase a quality pair for upwards of $150.

You're now set to experience the rich wildlife that Alaska has to offer throughout your journey. Keep an eye out for whales, the American bald eagle, orcas, seals, otters and even bears fishing for salmon.

The weather can be unpredictable, so it's wise to pack a warm sweatshirt, windbreaker, puffy jacket, sunglasses, a hoodie and some gloves to stay comfortable while you're on the open deck admiring nature.

It's crucial to book your tours as soon as you reserve your cruise, as Alaska's tours are in high demand. It's highly recommended to book directly with the cruise line to ensure that you're covered for any inconveniences like bad weather or delays. This way, you can relax and enjoy your vacation without the stress of making it back to the ship on time if you booked with an external tour company. Noteworthy tours include the SITKA wildlife encounter boat, Juneau Taku Lodge, Helicopter Glacier and Dog Sled and the Ketchikan crab fest and lumberjack show.

Remember to set your alarms to witness the cruise ship's approach to the Hubbard Glacier. Dress warmly, ensure your camera is charged and be ready to capture the stunning views of the largest glacier. Listen for the thunderous roar of the glacier calving into the water.

As with any cruise, make sure to take advantage of all the onboard activities, venues, restaurants, shows and trivias. Explore the ship, look out for the cruising ducks and enjoy a stroll under the stars. Take a dip in the jacuzzi, have a relaxing spa day and pamper yourself — you've earned it.
