Rainforest Adventure
Curator’s statement

My husband and I took our first trip together to Costa Rica, so it has a nostalgic, romantic feel to me as we fell in love with the land, the people and the “Pura Vida” way of life. We decided to take our kids back to our special place, but since we’re 15 years older and are now traveling with kids (and not backpacking on busses) our trip was quite a bit different. Wanting to give the kids a full Costa Rican experience, we split our time between the lush rainforest full of monkeys and sloths and the beach where we were able to crush some waves on our boards. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about this vacation.

Day 1: Rainforest Retreat, Serene Arrival, Dining Delight

Hot springs

We flew into San Jose and took a little private plane to Fortuna followed by a car ride to Nayara Tented Camp, where we stayed for three nights. Being in the rainforest, quite literally up in the trees, was an experience like no other. We were in awe when we got there and it was truly hard to leave our little haven of chill.

Get there just in time to unpack, walk around and get excited for the dream you have landed in and then grab dinner at Asia Luna.

Day 2: Coffee, Adventure, Dining

Boy in white dress enjoying his food

Have coffee and breakfast delivered to your room and eat outside and listen to and watch the wildlife from your deck.

Head to your first Costa Rican adventure at the Mystic Hanging Bridges tour

Come back and spend time relaxing at the pool (sit on one of the swings and grab a cocktail), dunk in to the various natural hot springs and go for a walk around the property. Be on the lookout for sloths and monkeys.

Have dinner at La Teraza and sit outside and soak it all in

Day 3: Adventure, Wildlife, Relaxation

family enjoying boating in Costa Rica

Because you don’t want to leave your room, get breakfast and coffee delivered again and then get on your sneakers because today is another adventure.

Have your driver/tour guide pick you up at the hotel and start with the Sloth Tour- we walked spent the day spotting sloths and monkeys, trying local cocoa and enjoying the sloth pace.

Get back to room to relax, rest your legs and lay in the hammock and read

Back out to do the Sky Tram and Trek Tour - you almost can’t go to Costa Rica and NOT zipline.

You’ll be wiped when you get back. Order room service and chill and watch the stars from your deck.

Day 4: Transition, Poolside Relaxation, Latin Cuisine

Travel advisor Lauren and children posing in swimsuits on a sandy beach.

Coffee and Breakfast in your room and say goodbye to what was your rainforest home.

Take a car service to the Four Seasons Peninsula Papagayo (you’ll pass the Andaz on the way, which is also beautiful)

Arrive at Four Seasons and get yourself to the pool to hang out and send the kids over to explore kids club

Dinner at BAHIA Latin Grill- local cuisine and Latin-inspired menu. It’s beautifully lit at night and we also loved having beers and lunch here after a morning surf session

Day 5: Surfing Lesson, Spa Relaxation, Stargazing

stargazing costa rica

Surf 101— The SurfX shop at Four Seasons Papagayo had the best surf pro, Hanna. We had our first day of Surf 101 and caught all the easy waves at Playa Blanca. Enough so that we felt confident to book another day of surfing — which I highly recommend if you’re up for it.

Come back to the Four Seasons, send the kids to Kids Club and get afternoon massages at the spa. Take some time to chill in the hot tub or pop into the cold plunge to refresh.

That night, do the Stargazing Tour. It was so good for the kids, but us parents learned just as much. Really cool experience, like no other.

Day 6: Golf, Kids Club, Poolside Shopping

A man golfing on a golf course next to the water.

Morning golf tee time for the adults at the Ocean Course and we sent the kids to kids club again

You can meet back up with the kids for lunch at the pool and to shop the local vendors on-site selling Costa Rican wares

Do some happy hour and pickleball and get drinks at this cute bar

Dinner at Nemare Steakhouse - this was an incredible dinner; we ate there it to celebrate my husband’s birthday

Day 7: Surfing, Dining, Adventure

Make some splash on the waves of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca beaches.

Anejo - morning breakfast (also good for a HH stop).

Surf Day at Witch’s Rock or Ollie Point, it’s a must-do in Costa Rica. It was such an incredible adventure and we caught the biggest waves ever. Have them pack up the cooler with some Imperials for the ride home. So many stories to tell after that trip.

Dinner at Pesce, outside overlooking the bay.

Day 8: Golf, Spa, Catamaran

A boy on a catamaran overlooking the water at sunset.

My husband and son went and played golf in the morning while us girls got massages by the pool at a spa cabana. Love that they would let my daughter get a massage (she was 7) and the golf course is a good spot for kids to both practice their swing but spot more monkeys and sloths (all the rage in Costa Rica)

Late afternoon we did the Half-Day Private Sunset Catamaran on the Lohe Lani, which was an epic boat ride where we celebrated my husband’s birthday.

Day 9: Farewell Rica!

Car transfer to Liberia airport; time to head home.
