Shop down State Street: Bristol’s main drag literally runs the line between Tennessee and Virginia—stand in two states at once. Both sides are packed with boutiques, antique finds, and local shops worth a slow afternoon.

Bristol Motor Speedway: Come for a race, stay for the fun. “The Last Great Colosseum” is one of the most electric short tracks in NASCAR, and the energy on a race weekend is something every visitor should experience at least once.

Birthplace of Country Music Museum: Go early—you could really spend some time here. This Smithsonian-affiliated museum tells the story of the 1927 Bristol Sessions, the recordings that put this town on the map as the birthplace of country music. Plan to linger.

Hiking the nearby state parks & trails: We didn’t get out on the trails ourselves due to accessibility limitations, but the nearby parks and trails earn high marks from other travelers. Steele Creek Park and Bristol Caverns are popular starting points if you want to get into the Blue Ridge scenery.

A day trip to Abingdon, VA: Venture a little further into Virginia—it’s a short, scenic drive with a lot packed into it. Wander the Abingdon Historic District, then visit the William King Museum of Art for regional and contemporary work. An easy, rewarding half-day add-on to a Bristol stay.

Bella’s Pizza & Subs: A great spot for good pizza—and don’t skip the Julienne salads, which are a local favorite in their own right.

Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards: Award-winning wines, a cozy atmosphere, and a beautiful setting. Try the Temptation (a sweet red). One tip: there are no signs, so drive past the inn, the spa, and the yurts—the tasting room is at the very end of the road.

Burger Bar: While you’re strolling downtown—literally walking the line between two states—stop in after shopping. The service is amazing and the food is old-fashioned diner fare with a burger focus.

Blackbird Bakery: After your burger, head up the block for a cookie or another baked good at this lovely bakery and café. Curl up in the corner on a cozy couch, read a book, and enjoy your bakes.

Sweetbay Brewing Company: The building is a refreshed old oil-change facility, now a cozy spot to grab a local craft brew.

Tumbling Creek Cider Company: If you have a gluten sensitivity—or just favor a cider—the selection here is great. I really enjoyed the Smoked Jalapeño. And right next door is some hard-to-beat BBQ at Delta Blues BBQ.

The Tavern (Abingdon, VA): Said to be the oldest tavern in Virginia. A great spot to grab a quick drink before dinner, or just to soak in the ambiance.
