Curator’s statement
Saint-Malo is a legendary walled city on Brittany’s rugged coast, where granite ramparts meet the endless sea. Trace the legacy of daring corsaires, wander cobblestone streets, and admire centuries-old architecture lovingly restored after World War II. Inside the walled city, you’ll find art galleries, cafés and the Gothic Saint-Vincent Cathedral. Venture out to the coastal forts steeped in maritime lore. Then, savor fresh seafood or a traditional Breton galette. Here, Breton flavors converge with history and culture, carrying travelers on a journey as bold and unforgettable as the corsaires who once called Saint-Malo home.

Day 1: The best of Saint-Malo

Galettes at Le Comptoir Breizh Cafe
Start the day wandering along the granite ramparts, where waves crash dramatically against the walls and the views stretch across the Brittany coast. Walk by Saint-Malo Castle as you head toward the inner city.
Enter the Intra Muros, aka the walled-in city, and explore its cobblestone streets. Browse charming local boutiques and indulge in a coffee and delicious kouign amann pastry at Récit de Voyage coffee shop.
Now that you have your energy restored, escape the touristy crowds and walk along Rue de l’Orme for quirky shops, galleries, and the renowned La Maison du Beurre Bordier. This shop is butter heaven! Jean-Yves Bordier’s hand-churned butters, from salted to seaweed or smoky flavors, are legendary in France. Stop in to taste and buy some amazing ones to take home as culinary souvenirs.
It’s lunchtime, so cross the street to Le Comptoir Breizh Cafe. Their buckwheat galettes range from traditional ham-and-cheese to inventive, Japanese-inspired flavors. They’re especially delicious paired with a glass of crisp Breton cider. Be sure to save room for dessert because the crepes there are divine!
Visit Saint-Vincent Cathedral, a Gothic cathedral in the old town, with dramatic, soaring arches and beautiful stained glass. Here, you’ll find the tomb of the explorer Jacques Cartier. If you’re able, visit in the late afternoon to witness light filtering through the cathedral’s stained glass and filling the church with gorgeous hues.
Next, walk up the Remparts de Saint-Malo for incredible views of the coast. Note that the trek can be steep and challenging in inclement weather.
If it’s low tide, head out to Fort National for more sweeping sea views and history. If you’re seeking a more rugged site, explore Fort du Petit Bé.
Need to know
You can reach Saint-Malo via a train ride that’s about two hours and 15 minutes direct from Paris Montparnasse. If you plan to explore further and are driving, the drive will take approximately four and a half to five hours, depending on the traffic.
