Things to do in the Balkans

Gjirokastër Castle, Albania

  • Walk the Walls of Dubrovnik (Croatia): Circle the Old Town along its towering medieval walls for stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, orange rooftops and historic forts — best done at golden hour.

  • Explore Butrint Archaeological Site (Albania): Wander through ancient Roman ruins partially reclaimed by nature. The setting is serene, the history deep and the crowds minimal.

  • Visit the Blue Eye Spring (Albania): Peer into a surreal, crystal-clear spring that looks like a bottomless blue vortex — refreshing, mysterious and unforgettable.

  • Climb to the Fortress in Prizren (Kosovo): Hike above the city for sweeping views of Prizren’s minarets, red rooftops and surrounding hills — perfect at sunset.

  • Get lost in the Old Bazaar of Skopje (North Macedonia): This historic market district is a lively mix of mosques, tea shops and artisan stalls — great for souvenirs and people-watching.

  • Hike the Kotor Fortress (Montenegro): Climb steep stone steps above Kotor’s Old Town to reach an ancient fortress with panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor — an iconic experience.

  • Sip Coffee in Perast (Montenegro): Slow down in this tiny coastal town with baroque charm. Sit by the bay, sip espresso and soak in views of the islets and mountains.

  • Cross the Stari Most Bridge in Mostar (Bosnia & Herzegovina): Walk this iconic bridge, a symbol of resilience and unity. Watch local daredevils dive into the Neretva River below (if you’re lucky!).

  • Explore Sarajevo’s Baščaršija Market (Bosnia & Herzegovina): Wander this atmospheric old market filled with traditional crafts, copperware, and the aroma of freshly grilled ćevapi.

  • Eat everything, everywhere: From flaky burek in Sarajevo to fresh seafood in Dubrovnik and syrupy desserts in Prizren — Balkan food is rich, hearty and made with love. Come hungry.

What to try: Qifqi (rice balls), byrek and local raki
Perched on a hill with views of the stone city, this place offers a home-style Albanian meal with a side of history. Don’t skip the raki — it’s strong, but it’s tradition!

  • Liburnia – Pristina, Kosovo
What to try: Kosovo Steak or Chicken
A beloved local spot known for its affordable, delicious grilled meats. Casual, fast and packed with flavor — locals swear by it.

This riverside restaurant offers a rustic, traditional menu and a lovely terrace with a view of the river beneath Mostar’s Bridge.

Need to know

  • Driving: Think Italian‑style roads — chaotic at first, but utterly manageable once you settle in.

  • Public Transportation: Unlike much of Europe, there are very few passenger train options. Buses can be unreliable and confusing for travel outside the big cities.
