Curator’s statement

Athens is a city of layers, where ancient history and contemporary life exist in constant dialogue. There is an energy here that feels both timeless and immediate, and in recent years the city has evolved significantly, with new world-class hotels, a dynamic culinary scene, and a renewed cultural momentum that makes it one of the most compelling cities in Europe today. What defines Athens is not just its monuments, but the contrast between them. This 3-day itinerary moves from grand archaeological sites to intimate neighborhoods and coastal corners, inviting you to experience the city in all its depth, past and present, at once.

Day 1: Athens unleashed: Ancient wonders & rooftop magic

Start your time in Athens with a bang at the iconic Acropolis of Athens, arriving early in the morning when the city is still quiet and the marble is bathed in soft, golden light. Explore its legendary monuments, including the Parthenon and the Erechtheion, before continuing down to the nearby Acropolis Museum, where sleek modern architecture frames ancient artifacts in a way that deepens your understanding of the site.

In the afternoon, make your way to Kolonaki, Athens’ most elegant shopping neighborhood, known for its designer boutiques, curated concept stores, and refined local ateliers. It’s the perfect place to slow down, mingle with the locals, grab a freddo cappuccino, and experience a more contemporary, polished side of the city, with plenty of stylish cafés for a relaxed break between stops.

From Kolonaki, continue up to Mount Lycabettus, where a short climb (or funicular ride) leads you to one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Athens. Watching the city stretch out below as the sun begins to dip is a highlight in itself, with the Acropolis rising clearly in the distance.

End the day at a rooftop bar overlooking the illuminated Acropolis of Athens, where the ancient monument glows against the modern skyline. It’s one of those quintessential Athens moments, where history, light, and atmosphere all converge in a single unforgettable view.

Day 2: From ancient alleys to riviera glam

Begin your day with an early morning stroll through the atmospheric streets of Plaka and the lively area around Monastiraki Square, where neoclassical façades, hidden alleys, and ancient ruins set the tone for a slow, cinematic start to the day. It’s the perfect moment to experience Athens at its most authentic, before the city fully wakes up.

From here, switch gears entirely and head south to the coast for a long, leisurely lunch along the Athenian Riviera in Vouliagmeni. Settle into either Ithaki Restaurant or Taverna 37 at the Four Seasons Astir Palace, where tables sit right by the sea and the pace slows into long, unhurried Mediterranean dining with views over the Saronic Gulf.

In the afternoon, continue along the coast to the iconic Temple of Poseidon, perched dramatically above the sea at Cape Sounio. This is one of Greece’s most powerful historical settings, especially in the late afternoon when the light turns golden and the temple feels almost suspended between land and sea.

End the day in style back along the coast at Island Club Restaurant or at Matsuhisa (hint, they have the best bar in the Riviera), where sunset cocktails and a lively dinner capture the more glamorous side of the Athenian Riviera.

Day 3: The grand finale & rooftop farewell

Begin your final day in Athens at the striking Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, a contemporary landmark where architecture, sea views, and culture come together in one expansive public space. It’s the perfect place to ease into the day, whether you explore the landscaped grounds, catch a cultural event, or simply enjoy the light-filled design overlooking the water.

Continue into the city for a deeper cultural immersion at two of Athens’ most important institutions: the Benaki Museum, which traces Greek history from antiquity to the modern era, and The Breeder Gallery, one of the city’s leading independent galleries, known for championing emerging Greek and international contemporary artists.

In the afternoon, shift into final shopping with stops at curated concept spaces such as Ergon House and artisan boutiques like Sandalia Sti Stoa, known for handcrafted Greek sandals and contemporary local design.

End your trip with sunset cocktails at The Dolli’s rooftop, where the atmosphere is effortlessly stylish and breathtaking views, before heading to dinner at Iodio Restaurant, a refined yet relaxed spot that captures modern Greek dining at its best, frequented by well-heeled Athenians and visitors alike.

Need to know

  • Athens is best enjoyed in the shoulder seasons, particularly from April to early June and September to October, when the weather is warm but not overwhelming and the city feels more relaxed. Summer can be very hot, especially in July and August, so early mornings and late afternoons are the most comfortable times to explore.

  • For those with extra time, consider extending your trip with a short island escape to the nearby Saronic Gulf. Both Hydra and Spetses are easily accessible from Athens and offer a completely different rhythm—Hydra with its car-free charm, art galleries, and understated elegance, and Spetses with its pine-fringed coastline, grand neoclassical mansions, and more cosmopolitan energy. A two-night stay on either island is the perfect way to balance Athens’ urban intensity with a slower, sea-focused finale.

  • Within the city, Athens rewards a flexible pace, some of its best moments come from lingering in cafés, wandering without a fixed plan, and allowing neighborhoods to unfold naturally. Evenings are especially important, as the city truly comes alive after sunset with rooftop bars, open-air dining, and a distinctly local social energy.
