Things to do on Madeira

Hiking on the northern coast of Madeira

  • Catch a sunrise at Pico do Arieiro: One of Madeira’s most iconic experiences is hiking up to Pico do Arieiro in the early morning to watch the sun rise above the clouds. The dramatic sea of peaks bathed in golden light is pure magic, and the hike to nearby Pico Ruivo offers even more jaw-dropping views. There are several less crowded trails around the area.

  • Swim in the natural pools of Porto Moniz: Carved by ancient lava flows and filled with crystal-clear Atlantic water, the natural volcanic pools of Porto Moniz are both beautiful and invigorating. It’s a perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring the island’s rugged north coast. This was my favorite excursion on Madeira, an absolute must!

  • Hike and snorkel at Ponta de São Lourenço: This eastern peninsula offers a different side of Madeira: dry, wind-swept, and wild. The hike here is relatively easy but rewards you with sweeping ocean views, unique rock formations, and a chance to snorkel in some of the clearest waters on the island.

  • Explore the culinary scene in Funchal: From Michelin-starred restaurants to casual seaside taverns, Funchal is a food lover’s dream. The local scabbardfish is amazing. I ordered every different preparation of this fish! Madeira is well-known for its fresh seafood, and tropical fruits as well as the best garlic bread (Bolo do Caco).

  • Ride the Monte cable car and stroll the botanical gardens: Take the scenic cable car from Funchal to the hillside village of Monte, where you’ll find panoramic views and the stunning Madeira Botanical Gardens. Brimming with exotic plants and vibrant blooms, it’s a peaceful oasis above the city.

  • Go whale and dolphin-watching: The waters around Madeira are a hotspot for marine life. Join a guided boat tour to see dolphins, pilot whales, and even sperm whales year-round.

  • Wander the Levadas: Madeira’s network of levadas, historic irrigation channels doubles as a unique system of scenic walking trails. Some are easy, flat strolls through forested valleys, while others wind along cliffs and waterfalls, offering truly one-of-a-kind access to the island’s interior.

Places to eat & drink on Madeira

  • Olivia (Funchal): We had one of the best meals of the trip here. The lamb shank, curried shrimp, and steak were all incredible. Reservations are definitely needed.

  • Akua (Funchal): Exceptional, seafood-focused restaurant, reservations required.

  • Mad Market (Funchal): Located in a mall, in the hotel zone, don’t let the location fool you, the food and wine selection here is excellent.

  • Book dinner at a local home and try Madeira specialties like espetada and poncha.

Must-try foods: scabbardfish (mild and delicious), spicy squid dish, bolo do caco, Portuguese cheeses, tropical fruits, and anything with passionfruit (maracuya) sauce!

Need to know

Madeira has a mild and sunny climate year-round. There are direct flights from NYC making it an easy destination from the East Coast. You could easily spend one to two weeks just exploring Madeira, but it also pairs well with a visit to the Portuguese mainland or the Azores Islands.
