Curator’s statement
I’ve never met anyone who visited Chiang Mai and didn’t fall in love with it. The city offers a perfect blend of a relaxing pace and the conveniences of a big city. Here, bustling markets coexist with serene temples, and you can immerse yourself in nature within minutes. And let’s not forget the delicious street food on every corner, making every meal an adventure. Chiang Mai leaves a lasting impression from the moment you arrive. It enticed me to spend a winter freelancing here, followed by a permanent move to the city in 2024. This guide highlights some of Chiang Mai’s most wonderful gems.

Things to do in Chiang Mai

Eat the best the city has to offer—on the back of a motorbike!
Sure, you’ll have no trouble finding street food on your own, but if you enlist the help of Just Love Experience, they’ll whisk you away on the back of motorbikes to spots only a local would know. It’s an evening you won’t soon forget, and my top tip for Chiang Mai.
Shop, shop, and shop
Look, I’m not typically a shopper. But on vacation and with as many options as exist in Chiang Mai, even I can be enticed. Favorites include Warowat, a bustling local hub full of fresh produce, spices, textiles, and street food and Jing Jai market, which combines a farmers market with artisan goods, handmade clothing, and more.
Spend a day with elephants
Dozens of elephant sanctuaries exist in the areas surrounding Chiang Mai, but be sure to read up on responsible tourism practices and make sure you pick and experience one that’s ethical. Just Love Experience, the operator mentioned above, offers ethical elephant excursions.
Temple hop
Chiang Mai has over 300 temples to explore. Top picks include:
Wat Phra Singh, known for its stunning Lanna architecture.
Wat Chedi Luang, home to a massive 15th-century chedi.
Wat Chiang Man, the city’s oldest temple with historic Buddha images. Each offers a mix of history, art, and quiet corners to soak it all in.
Relax!
Pop into almost any massage place, hand over a very reasonable $8–10, and tune out for an hour. Or, if you’re with friends, sink into a lounge chair for a foot massage and some conversation.
