Advisor - Little Feet, Big Adventures: A Family’s Guide to Lake of the Ozarks
Curator’s statement

Lake of the Ozarks has been a part of my story since childhood. It's where I first discovered the magic of travel and the joy of slow, intentional moments with family. Even as one of the country’s largest lakes, it still feels laid-back and personal, offering everything from beachside fun at Franky & Louie’s to boat-up restaurants like Backwater Jack’s with live music and poolside vibes. It’s the kind of place where you can make memories without overplanning. That perfect mix of relaxation and adventure is what keeps me — and so many families — coming back year after year.

Things to do in the Ozarks

Beach day at Franky & Louie’s: Kick back with your toes in the sand while the kids play volleyball or bags. Grab food, frozen drinks and ice cream — all without leaving the beach.

Lunch & live music at Backwater Jack’s: Pull up by boat, enjoy delicious food and vibe out to live music by the pool. It's fun, upbeat and one of those places that instantly feels like summer.

Cove floating with the crew: Drop anchor, grab the floaties and spend hours floating, laughing and soaking up the sun. The coves are where the best family memories are made.

Fishing off the dock: Simple and peaceful — early mornings or sunset fishing with the kids is always a win. No agenda, just time together.

Sunset cruise by pontoon: Load up the family, grab some snacks and cruise the shoreline as the sun sets. Golden skies, calm waters — pure lake magic.

Pool-hopping at waterfront restaurants: Many spots have pools right next to the lake. Let the kids swim while you sip something cold — best of both worlds!

Mini-golf & arcade adventures: When you’re ready for a break from the water, hit one of the local mini golf courses or arcades. It’s classic family fun that never gets old.

Ice cream runs by boat: A simple favorite: hop on the boat just to grab ice cream. Something about a treat on the water hits differently.

Exploring local shops & boutiques: From lake-themed décor to quirky souvenirs, exploring the small-town shops around the lake is the perfect chill afternoon.

Staying up late at the fire pit: End the day lakeside with a fire, some s’mores and a round of “remember when” stories. It’s how you wrap up a perfect day on lake time.

Places to eat & drink in the Ozarks

Paradise Tropical Restaurant & Bar: Our go-to lake spot with the best Cajun pasta on the water. The vibe is casual, the view is perfect and the live music adds the right kind of lake energy for all ages.

The Hatch: Brunch with a view and a menu that goes above and beyond for dietary needs. They were super food-sensitive friendly, which made it a win for our gluten-free, egg-free kiddo.

Tucker’s Shuckers: Not only does it have great seafood and oysters, but it’s right next to The Malted Monkey — an epic ropes course perfect for kids (and adventurous adults). Wrap it up with one of their milkshakes for dessert!

Franky & Louie’s Beachfront Bar & Grill: Iconic for families. With everything from ice cream shakes and fried apps to full dinner plates, it’s easy to stay all day. Bonus points for sand volleyball, lawn games and a beach for the kids.

LandShark Bar & Grill: Located at Margaritaville, this lakefront spot nails the tropical vacation feel. Don’t miss their spinach artichoke dip — it’s a must-order appetizer every time.

Redhead Lakeside Grill: Trendy yet laid-back, with a huge pool and killer food. Their pizza game is strong, especially the gluten-free and cauliflower crust options — perfect for dietary-conscious travelers.

Backwater Jack’s: This spot delivers fun and flavor. Pull up by boat and order the fried green beans, Colossal Crab Rangoon and even fresh sushi — seriously! It’s one of those places where you stay longer than planned.

Wicked Willy’s Sports Grill: When you’re off the water but still want to keep the energy going, Wicked Willy’s has a fun vibe, plenty of TVs for the sports fans and an easy menu that pleases everyone.

Need to know

Why Lake of the Ozarks should be on your radar: A Midwest gem where you don’t need a packed itinerary to make unforgettable memories.

Don’t overplan — just float with it: The best advice I can give? Don’t try to do it all. Lake of the Ozarks isn’t meant to be rushed. Some of the best moments come from lazy mornings, spontaneous boat rides and discovering that hidden cove or live band by total accident. Come ready to explore — but let the lake set the pace.

Foodie fun for everyone: Whether you’re arriving by boat or by car, you’ll find something to crave. Think beachside burgers, Cajun pasta, dockside sushi and gluten-free pizza options. From family-friendly joints with ice cream and volleyball to vibrant nightlife with poolside bars and live music, the food scene is as laid-back as it is diverse.

Family adventures galore: The lake isn’t just for grown-ups. Ropes courses, mini golf, beach play, fishing and swim-up restaurants make it a dream for kids (and the young at heart). Many attractions are walkable, boat-up accessible or come with a side of soft-serve.

Grown-up getaways: If you’re looking for adult-only fun, there’s plenty of that too. Start with brunch and Bloody Marys, float the day away in a party cove and end it dancing to a live band while sipping a lakeside cocktail.

Outdoors beyond the water: Boating may be the star of the show, but the lake area is full of hidden gems. Tee off at scenic golf courses, explore hiking trails or check out local wineries and breweries.

Shop local, relax: Between swims and sunsets, explore charming boutiques, souvenir shops and one-of-a-kind finds around the lake. It’s the perfect way to add a little retail therapy to your vacation.
