From my first visit to Iceland, I immediately recognized it as a destination unlike any I had experienced before. Its distinctive Nordic character, countless waterfalls, and remarkable geothermal springs create an atmosphere that feels both otherworldly and deeply inviting. It’s a place that continues to draw me back, offering new discoveries with every return.

Things to do in Iceland

Relaxing in the Blue Lagoon—a must!

Explore the Golden Circle

Experience three of Iceland’s most iconic natural wonders—Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall—on a scenic and easily accessible loop from Reykjavík. These sites are easy to get to and navigate on your own. After your exploration of the Golden Circle, stop by Myvatyn Baths before heading back to Reyjkavík, where you can relax in their peaceful geothermal baths. For an added bonus, try their homemade bread that is baked in the naturally heated ground under the hot springs.

Explore the many geothermal spas that Iceland has to offer

In addition to the Myvatyn Baths and the Blue Lagoon, the most famous geothermal spa experience that Iceland is known for, there are several others worth exploring. Two of my favorites were the Sky Lagoon, just 15 minutes from Reykjavík city center, and Hvammsik Hot Springs. The Sky Lagoon offers a true spa experience with a multi-step wellness ritual that includes the lagoon soak, a cold plunge, sauna, body scrub, cool mist, steam room, and shower. Hvammsik Hot Springs offers a serene, nature immersive bathing experience set along the shores of Hvalfjörður, about an hour outside of Reykjavík. Its series of ocean-fed geothermal pools blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, creating a peaceful atmosphere with sweeping fjord views. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can dive into the ocean for a true cold plunge experience!

Chase waterfalls along the south coast

From the powerful Skógafoss to the ethereal Seljalandsfoss, the south coast features some of Iceland’s most photogenic and accessible waterfalls. During your visit to Skogafoss, there is an option to climb over 500 steps (approximately 200 feet) to reach the top of this waterfall. Once you’re at the top, there is a path that follows the Skógá River into the highlands, leading to over 20 additional waterfalls! In my opinion, this was completely worth the trek up those stairs! While most are familiar with the opportunity to walk behind Seljalandfoss (don’t forget your waterproof outewear!), don’t miss out on the hidden waterfall tucked into a cave, just a short walk from Seljalandfoss. Gljúfrabúi is partially concealed by a cliff, creating a magical, secluded atmosphere. To see it up close, you step through a narrow, shallow stream into the mossy chamber where the falls plunge from above. A truly unique and unforgettable experience!

Visit one of the many glaciers

Iceland has over 200 glaciers that make up approximately 10 percent of its land mass. Watch massive icebergs drift through a glacial lagoon toward the sea at Jökulsárlón, then walk along Diamond Beach where ice fragments shimmer on black sand. If you visit during the summer, I would highly recommend a kayaking tour on the Sólheimajökull glacier.

Experience the Northern Lights

During winter, Iceland provides exceptional viewing conditions for the aurora borealis, with dark skies and minimal light pollution. Keep in mind that the best time of year to view the Northern Lights is winter, when Iceland experiences up to 20 hours of darkness.

Discover Reykjavík’s culture & cuisine

Iceland’s capital blends Nordic design, inventive dining, and a vibrant arts scene, all within a compact and walkable city center. I’ve truly had so many amazing meals in Reykjavík.

Places to eat & drink in Iceland

Delicious and fresh seafood at Sjávargrillið

Fjallkonan

A stylish, contemporary restaurant in downtown Reykjavík offering elevated Icelandic comfort food with a playful twist. Its vibrant atmosphere and beautifully plated dishes make it a favorite for both locals and visitors. We enjoyed the most delicious brunch here upon landing in Reykjavík. A perfect start to our vacation!

Black Crust Pizzeria

Located in Vik, near the famous black sand beach, there is a reason this pizzeria is Instagram-famous. Known for its signature charcoal-infused crust, this pizza was worth the 30-minute wait! It’s a casual yet trendy spot perfect for a quick, memorable meal.

Posthús Food Hall

A modern food hall featuring a curated mix of global cuisines and local specialties under one roof. I personally love a good food hall, providing numerous options for a group. We loved it so much, we visited twice during our week-long stay!

Sjávargrillið (Seafood Grill)

A warm, inviting restaurant specializing in fresh Icelandic seafood prepared with refined Nordic techniques. Its menu highlights the best of Iceland’s coastal ingredients in a cozy, upscale setting. I first visited this restaurant in 2018 and, on my return trip to Reykjavík in 2024, I intentionally sought it out again. To say the meal was memorable would be an understatement!

ROK

A chic, design-forward restaurant near the famous Hallgrímskirkja church, ROK is known for its small plates and modern Icelandic flavors. Its rooftop terrace and stylish interior make it a standout for a relaxed yet elevated meal. My friend and I happened upon this place after visiting Hallgrimskirkja and it was easily one of the best meals we had on our entire trip.

Monkeys Reykjavik

A vibrant, design-driven restaurant offering an inventive fusion of Peruvian and Japanese flavors in a lively, tropical-inspired setting, Monkeys offered a truly unique dining experience. Known for its creative cocktails, bold small plates, and energetic atmosphere, it’s a standout choice for a fun, upscale night out in Reykjavík. Don’t miss the Champagne Train cocktail bar next to Monkeys!

Need to know

Overall, things in Iceland are relatively expensive, so it's best to be prepared for that. Most locals speak very good English and Iceland is known for being one of the safest countries in the world! There are so many amazing sites to explore and experiences to enjoy, you really can't go wrong with a visit to this otherworldly destination!
