Things to do in French Polynesia

Tahiti:
Take advantage of your time in Tahiti to relax and adjust to the time zone. Here are some wonderful activities to explore:
Papeete Market: Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Marché de Papeete, an open-air market in the heart of the capital. It’s the perfect place to browse colorful local crafts, pick up Polynesian souvenirs and sample fresh tropical fruits.
Fautaua Waterfall: Enjoy a scenic drive to Fautaua Waterfall, one of Tahiti’s most stunning natural landmarks. Nestled in a lush rainforest, this tranquil spot offers breathtaking views and a serene environment.
Botanical Gardens of Vaipahi: Located near the village of Taravao, the Botanical Gardens of Vaipahi showcase a rich collection of native plants. Take a leisurely stroll through this tropical oasis, where you can discover Tahiti’s diverse plant life in a peaceful, lush setting.
Teahupo’o: Famous for its world-class surf breaks, Teahupo’o on the southwest coast of Tahiti, attracts advanced surfers seeking the thrill of massive waves. Even if you’re not a surfer, the powerful waves and dramatic coastline are a sight to behold.
Faarumai Waterfalls: A hidden gem near the village of Papenoo, Faarumai Waterfalls is an idyllic spot for swimming and relaxing. Surrounded by nature, this peaceful location offers a perfect escape into Tahiti’s natural beauty.
For accommodations in Tahiti, I recommend two great options depending on your preferences:
Hilton Tahiti: Ideal for those seeking a more modern and romantic atmosphere. This stylish resort offers a sleek, contemporary design and luxurious amenities, perfect for a tranquil escape.
InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa: A fantastic choice for families. This resort boasts a welcoming, Polynesian-inspired theme, with spacious rooms and activities for all ages.
Both resorts are conveniently located near the airport and ferry terminal, ensuring easy access to your travel needs.
Moorea:
Jet ski tour or lagoon tour: Discover Moorea’s stunning coastline with a guided tour. For a thrilling adventure, opt for a Jet Ski to zip across the crystal-clear waters, or choose a boat or catamaran for a more laid-back experience. Along the way, you’ll glide through turquoise lagoons, witnessing dramatic landscapes and stopping at prime spots to swim with sharks and stingrays. You will also encounter sea turtles, and admire the island’s breathtaking coastline.
ATV tour: For those looking to explore beyond the coast, take an ATV ride through Moorea’s lush interior. This guided adventure will take you through verdant valleys, up to the hills for panoramic views and past the famous pineapple fields. Along the way, learn about the island’s rich history, culture and the significance of its diverse landscapes.
Sunset cruises: Don’t miss a magical sunset cruise across Moorea’s tranquil lagoon. For a more intimate experience, consider booking a private tour to enjoy the stunning sunset in a serene and unforgettable way.
Whale watching (seasonal): From July to October, Moorea is a top destination for whale watching. It offers some of the world’s best opportunities to see humpback whales up close. Embark on a guided tour to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Explore the island by car: Rent a car and embark on a leisurely drive around Moorea to uncover its hidden treasures. Stop by the stunning Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, surrounded by towering mountains and lush tropical vegetation. Be sure to visit the Belvedere Lookout, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the island and its picturesque surroundings.
Relax and unwind: If relaxation is what you’re after, Moorea is the perfect haven. Spend your days lounging on pristine beaches, enjoying a rejuvenating spa experience or savoring the island’s delectable cuisine at one of the resort’s restaurants. If you’re staying at the Sofitel or Hilton, you can take advantage of complimentary kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel equipment to explore Moorea’s vibrant underwater world.
For accommodation, I personally prefer the Sofitel Moorea, unless you're specifically looking to stay in a villa rather than an overwater bungalow. The Hilton Moorea is a great option if you prefer a villa experience. All of their garden villas come with a private plunge pool, offering added privacy and comfort. However, the Sofitel stands out with its prime location on one of the best beaches in Moorea. It offers incredible snorkeling right off the shore. It also feels more modern and recently renovated compared to the Hilton, providing a more contemporary and sleek atmosphere.
On the other hand, the Hilton features a larger pool, making it a better option for families looking for more space to relax and play. Each resort offers its own unique charm and amenities. It really depends on what type of experience you're seeking — whether it's the luxury of an overwater bungalow and stunning beachfront access at the Sofitel, or the extra privacy and family-friendly features of the Hilton.
Bora Bora:
While Moorea offers a wealth of thrilling activities, I recommend using your time in Bora Bora to relax and unwind. That said, the Lagoon Tour in Bora Bora is an absolute must. Not only will you have the chance to explore the vibrant aquatic life in the crystal-clear waters, but you'll also receive fascinating insights into the island's culture and history, truly an immersive experience. For those looking to elevate their adventure, a helicopter tour is a fantastic way to see the island from a breathtaking perspective. Offering sweeping views of the lagoon and surrounding landscapes.
If you’re staying in Bora Bora for more than four days, consider splitting your time between a few hotels to experience different aspects of the island’s luxury offerings. My personal favorites are the Four Seasons, Intercontinental Thalasso, Conrad and St. Regis. Each resort offers its own unique charm: The St. Regis boasts the finest dining experience, while the Conrad is youthful, vibrant and staffed by an exceptional team. The Intercontinental Thalasso offers remarkable value for the luxury experience, and the Four Seasons provides the most stunning views of Mount Otemanu and the lagoon.
Day trips:
French Polynesia is made up of several stunning islands, each offering unique experiences. Aside from Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora, here are some other beautiful islands you can explore:
Raiatea: Known as the "Sacred Island," Raiatea is rich in Polynesian culture and history. It is home to the Taputapuātea Marae, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is a great place for hiking, exploring ancient temples and sailing. Raiatea is also a gateway to the beautiful island of Taha'a, which is just a short boat ride away.
Taha'a: Taha’a is often referred to as the "Vanilla Island" because it is known for its vanilla plantations. The island is more laid-back and less touristy than Bora Bora, making it ideal for those looking for a peaceful escape. It's also a great place for snorkeling, with stunning coral gardens, and visiting the local pearl farms.
Huahine: A quieter island, Huahine offers a more authentic Polynesian experience. It is famous for its lush landscapes, beautiful beaches and ancient archaeological sites. Visitors can explore the island by bike, take boat tours or visit the local villages. The island is also known for its connection to Polynesian legends and myths.
Maupiti: Often called "the little Bora Bora," Maupiti is a hidden gem with fewer tourists, giving it a peaceful and authentic atmosphere. It's an excellent destination for snorkeling, with beautiful coral reefs and clear lagoons. Maupiti also boasts dramatic mountain views and quiet beaches perfect for unwinding.
Rangiroa: Rangiroa is one of the world’s largest atolls and a paradise for divers. It's famous for its extraordinary underwater biodiversity, including sharks, manta rays and vibrant coral reefs. The island is ideal for those looking to experience a more remote, off-the-beaten-path destination. Apart from diving, visitors can explore the local villages and enjoy the serenity of this beautiful atoll.
Fakarava: Fakarava is another stunning atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago, renowned for its crystal-clear waters, amazing diving spots and abundant marine life. The atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, making it an important place for eco-tourism. It's less touristy than other islands, offering a more intimate and tranquil experience.
Marquesas Islands: The Marquesas Islands are a remote group of islands that are less visited than the Society Islands. Offering a more rugged and adventurous experience. The islands are known for their dramatic landscapes, towering mountains and rich cultural history. It’s perfect for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, with options for hiking, exploring ancient petroglyphs and experiencing traditional Polynesian life.
Each island in French Polynesia has its own unique charm, from serene lagoons and vibrant coral reefs to rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes. Whether you seek adventure, relaxation or cultural immersion, French Polynesia offers something for every traveler.
