Check into a luxury boutique villa and unwind with a spa treatment or a sunset cocktail by the beach. Enjoy a private dinner of freshly caught seafood while overlooking the ocean.

Day 2: Journey to Sigiriya & The Lion Rock Fortress

Stay at: Heritance Kandalama (Architectural masterpiece by Geoffrey Bawa).

Depart for the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, traveling through lush countryside and rural villages before arriving at Heritance Kandalama, a stunning eco-luxury hotel harmoniously built into the jungle landscape.

After checking in, spend the afternoon exploring Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Asia’s most impressive archaeological treasures. Climb to the top for amazing panoramic views of the surrounding forest, then return to your hotel to relax by the infinity pool overlooking the lake. In the evening, enjoy a calm, delicious dinner featuring contemporary Sri Lankan dishes.

Day 3: Sunrise & safari adventure

Rise before dawn for a sunrise hike up Pidurangala Rock, starting from a serene monastery. The 20–30 minute trail rewards you with breathtaking views of Sigiriya glowing in the morning light—a moment of pure magic.

After breakfast back at the hotel, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, an ancient complex adorned with golden Buddha statues and intricate murals.

In the afternoon, set out on a private jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park, where herds of elephants gather near shimmering lakes.

Head back to Heritance Kandalama for a relaxing evening—maybe enjoy a spa treatment or sip a sunset cocktail on your balcony while listening to the jungle come alive around you.

Day 4: Kandy: sacred traditions & hill country charm

Stay at: W15 Hanthana Estate, Kandy

Journey to Kandy, the island’s spiritual capital nestled among misty hills. Visit the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, where evening prayers create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Stroll around Kandy Lake or visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya before retreating to W15 Hanthana Estate, a refined tea estate offering serene views and impeccable service.

Savor a farm-to-table dinner paired with Ceylon tea-inspired cocktails.

Day 5: Nuwara Eliya: tea country elegance

Stay at: Grand Hotel, Nuwara Eliya

Travel through scenic mountain roads or take the iconic train ride to Nuwara Eliya, winding past rolling tea plantations and misty hills. Arrive at the Grand Hotel, a historic colonial landmark in the heart of the highlands.

Spend the day visiting a working tea plantation to learn about tea production and enjoy a private tasting. Stroll through the hotel’s lush gardens and the charming town streets, soaking in the highland scenery. In the afternoon, indulge in High Tea at the Grand Hotel, a timeless colonial tradition.

End the day relaxing by the fireplace with a glass of fine wine or enjoying a spa treatment, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the hill country.

Day 6: Scenic train to Ella

After breakfast in Nuwara Eliya, embark on the iconic train journey to Ella, one of the world’s most beautiful rail rides.

Tips:

  • Timing & train: Opt for a mid-morning departure to make the most of daylight.

  • Seating: For the best panoramic views of tea plantations, waterfalls, and jungle valleys, sit on the right-hand side of the train heading toward Ella.

  • Duration: Approximately 3–4 hours, with plenty of opportunities for photos through the open carriage windows.

Upon arrival in Ella, check into your chosen luxury accommodation. Spend the afternoon settling in, strolling through nearby tea plantations. In the evening, sip a sunset cocktail while taking in the breathtaking highland scenery.

Arrive at Yala National Park on the southeast coast and check into your luxury accommodation at Wild Coast Tented Lodge—Relais & Châteaux, where the jungle meets the ocean.

Yala is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserves, renowned for its high concentration of leopards, elephants, and diverse birdlife.

Spend the afternoon settling in and exploring the lodge’s surroundings. Optional: Embark on a private whale-watching cruise from Mirissa for a chance to see majestic blue whales and dolphins. Return to Cape Weligama in the late afternoon for leisure and a final gourmet dinner under the stars.

Day 13: Travel to Colombo & city discovery

After breakfast, check out and take a private transfer or seaplane to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital. Spend the day discovering the city’s highlights: visit Gangaramaya Temple, explore Pettah Market, or stroll along the Galle Face Green promenade.

Check into Shangri-La Colombo in the evening, where you can relax and enjoy the luxury of your riverside or city-view room.

Day 14: Colombo & departure

After breakfast at Shangri-La, your private transfer will take you to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward flight, leaving you with unforgettable memories of Sri Lanka’s temples, tea hills, wildlife, and beautiful coastline.

Need to know

  • Private transfers are best: Traveling by private car with a driver is the easiest, safest, and most comfortable way to explore Sri Lanka. It allows flexibility for stops along the way, and you can travel at your own pace without the stress of public transport.

  • Train journeys are a must: The scenic train rides through the hill country, especially Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella, are iconic. For the best views, sit on the right-hand side heading toward Ella and try to take the train during daylight hours.

  • Dress respectfully at cultural sites: When visiting temples, monasteries, or sacred sites, shoulders and knees should be covered. Some sites may provide shawls if needed.

  • Weather & packing tips: Hill country (Nuwara Eliya, Ella) can be cool and misty, so pack a light jacket. The coast is warm and humid—light, breathable clothing is best. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle.

  • Wildlife & safaris: Safaris in Yala and national parks are best in the early morning or late afternoon for animal sightings. Binoculars and a good camera with a zoom lens are highly recommended.
