Curator’s statement
Bellagio takes my breath away—in more ways than one. I am surrounded by beauty everywhere I look. The mountainous terrain makes for glorious scenery and exhilarating walks. Shopping for that perfect silk scarf is delightful. And the food and wine is exceptional—even in the little out-of-the-way places.

Things to do in Lake Como, Italy

Giardini Di Villa Melzi
Villa Melzi Gardens
I visited in the spring when the jasmine was in full bloom, and the aroma was intoxicating. Vibrant azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias thrive beneath the shade of centuries-old trees. The serene Japanese-style pond and garden captivate the senses, while a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge offers a feast for the eyes. Villa Melzi is within walking distance of the ferry station.
Shop for silk
Como’s world-renowned silk production shines in Bellagio’s charming shops, where an exquisite array of silk scarves, ties, and clothing awaits. Lightweight and luxurious, silk scarves are the perfect keepsake—compact enough to justify bringing home more than just one!
Unwind with an aperitivo
Embrace Italy’s aperitivo tradition, a delightful ritual to ease from day to evening. I loved savoring a Hugo Spritz while gazing over the lake, reflecting on the day’s adventures. Always served with a light snack, this Italian “happy hour” is the perfect way to relax and recharge.
Ferry to Villa Monastero
A quick ferry ride across the lake took us to Varenna, where we visited Villa Monastero. Originally a 12th-century women’s monastery, this historic site now houses a fascinating museum and breathtaking botanical gardens. We enjoyed a late lunch in Varenna before hopping on the ferry back to Bellagio.
Explore the lake by boat
We are sailing enthusiasts, so renting a sailboat from Bellagio Sailing offered an unforgettable afternoon on Lake Como. If skippering isn’t your style, they provide a range of guided tours on sailboats or motorboats, from brief excursions to full-day adventures, showcasing the lake’s stunning villas and picturesque villages.
Places to eat & drink in Lake Como, Italy

Negroni, hugo spritz, bellini....what's your pleasure?
Albori at Hotel Belvedere
One of the best meals we had in Bellagio. The chef visited our table and told us about each dish, and you cannot beat the view. The Hotel Belvedere is not in the town center, but Albori is worth the walk. We enjoyed an aperitivo on the terrace later in the week.
Terrazza Darsena at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni
We enjoyed a spectacular sunset while listening to music and enjoying Bellinis and a snack. We moved inside with the pianist so we could hear more!
Lido do Bellagio
We happened to stop here after our visit to Villa Melzi, and were so glad we did. The pasta bolognese was so good we had to go back again a few days later.
La Bellagina Ristorante Pizzeria
Who would expect a place with “pizzeria” in the name to have a view like this! They also serve delicious pasta and fish. We happened to visit when a large men’s choral group was dining (there was some sort of competition going on in the area), so we were serenaded with several marvelous songs while enjoying our dinner.
Caffe Teti
We stopped here for a coffee while waiting for the ferry, and the non-coffee drinkers among us raved about their hot chocolate. They serve pizza and snacks too.
Need to know
If you come to Bellagio for the day and want to explore the “upper” part of the town, you can avoid many stairs by turning left when you get off the ferry, and going to the end of the street. At the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, turn right and follow Via Roma up the hill to the Basilica di San Giacomo. This will take you uphill at a much shallower incline.
Our group of five friends stayed in a villa in Bellagio and walked into the town center each day. It is a small town and it was easy to learn our way around. We enjoyed it, but I would recommend that you stay closer to the town center if you don’t want to deal with lots of steep inclines and stairs.
