Things to do in Istanbul

Get lost in the streets of the Old Town: Istanbul’s Old Town is one of the most fascinating in the world, steeped in thousands of years of history. Don’t miss iconic landmarks like the Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, and the Archaeology Museum.
Treat yourself to a traditional Turkish bath: The historic Çagaloglu Hamam, dating back over 300 years, is an unforgettable experience. Prices range from €90 to €400 per person depending on the package. After your treatment, enjoy a meal at the stunning “Lokanta 1741” inside the hamam—each dish tells a story of regional flavors and Turkish culture. Reservations are a must for both.
Shop and sip at Galataport: Explore the stylish shops and waterfront views at Galataport, then unwind with a sunset cocktail at the Peninsula Hotel. For a dose of contemporary art, visit the Istanbul Modern Museum, followed by dinner with a view at Restaurant Modern overlooking the historic peninsula.
Wander through Karakoy, Cihangir, and Beyoglu: These vibrant neighborhoods are full of charm, with art galleries, cozy cafés, and cobblestone streets. Make your way to Galata Tower and grab a table at Barnathan Galata to enjoy an incredible view of the tower while you dine.
Soak in the colors of Balat: Known for its colorful houses and vintage vibe, Balat is a photographer’s dream. Pop into antique shops, explore old churches, and feel the layered history in every corner.
Take a Bosphorus cruise: Spend a relaxing afternoon sailing between two continents as you pass centuries-old waterfront mansions along the Bosphorus. It’s the perfect way to experience Istanbul from a different perspective.
Escape to the Princes’ Islands: If you have extra time, spend a day on the islands—my personal favorites are Buyukada and Burgazada. With no cars allowed, you can wander past historic mansions, enjoy seaside cafés, and feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Catch a Whirling Dervish Show at Galata Mevlevihanesi: If you’re in the mood for something truly unique, check out a Whirling Dervish ceremony at the Galata Mevlevihanesi—it’s one of the oldest dervish lodges in Istanbul. The music, the slow, graceful spinning, the whole vibe... it’s peaceful, powerful, and unlike anything else you’ll see. It’s a cool way to connect with the spiritual side of the city. Just make sure to book your ticket ahead—it can sell out!
Places to eat & drink in Istanbul

Villa Bosphorus: You haven’t really done Istanbul if you haven’t had breakfast by the Bosphorus with seagulls and ferries passing by. Order a simit (Turkish bagel) and menemen, or eggs with spicy sausage (sucuk). If you’re in the mood for something more upscale, check out breakfast at Four Seasons Bosphorus (Aqua) or Çırağan Palace—both are stunning.
Bebek Terrace Restaurant: One of the best terraces along the Bosphorus. Perfect for any time of day—morning coffee, lunch with a breeze, or dinner with city lights twinkling around you.
Kaşıbeyaz Bosphorus: Come here for amazing kebabs and royal vibes. The Ottoman-inspired decor and all-white interiors make you feel like you’re dining in a palace—with one of the best waterfront views in town.
Sunset Grill & Bar: A popular after-work spot with a killer view over the Bosphorus. Their sushi and Japanese dishes are top-notch, but the vibe is what really makes it.
Telezzüz: If you’re vegan (or just curious), this plant-based fine dining spot is full of flavor and intention. Beautiful dishes, a strong focus on sustainability, and a stylish setting.
Mikla: Michelin-starred and totally worth the hype. The 360° view of Istanbul is breathtaking, and the food is a creative twist on Turkish and Scandinavian flavors. Go at sunset for the full effect.
Lacivert: My favorite fish restaurant in Istanbul. Right by the water, under the bridge. You’ll literally feel like you’re dining on the Bosphorus. If dolphins swim by, don’t be surprised!
Divan Brasserie Beyoğlu: Located right on Istiklal Street, with a gorgeous view of the Old City and Hagia Sophia. Great for a long lunch, drinks at golden hour, or dinner after shopping around.
Del Mare, Çengelköy: On the Asian side, in a beautifully restored Ottoman-era building. Amazing seafood, unbeatable views, and a super romantic vibe.
Pandeli Restaurant: Last but not least, this iconic spot inside the Spice Bazaar is full of history. It’s been around for over a century and still serves up some of the best traditional Turkish food in the city—don’t skip the eggplant dishes!
Need to know
Cash is still king in some places: While most restaurants and shops take cards, smaller spots—like local markets, ferries, or street vendors—often prefer cash. It’s always a good idea to keep some Turkish lira on you.
Dress comfortably, but respectfully: Istanbul is a modern city, but you’ll be visiting historic mosques and religious sites—bring a scarf or shawl if you plan to enter those spaces.
Taxis can be tricky: Use apps like BiTaksi or Uber.
Traffic is real: Especially during rush hour. Try to use the ferry system or metro when possible—it’s affordable, scenic, and surprisingly efficient.
Tap water isn’t usually drunk: Locals typically drink bottled or filtered water, so stick to that just to be safe.
Learn a few Turkish words: A simple “Merhaba” (hello) or “Tesekkurler” (thank you) goes a long way, and locals really appreciate the effort.
Pace yourself: Istanbul is a city that deserves to be savored, not rushed. Don’t try to see everything in one day—leave time to just wander, sip Turkish tea, and soak it all in.
