If you’re craving an adventure, Sri Lanka absolutely deserves a place on your list. I first ended up there almost by chance—it wasn’t part of the plan, just a twist of happenstance during my travels. Looking back, I’m so grateful I decided to work it into my trip, because it quickly became one of my favorite destinations I’ve ever visited. What began as an unplanned detour turned into a place that surprised me at every turn and left a lasting impression, one that still calls me back long after I’ve left.

Things to do in Ella, Sri Lanka

Before you even arrive in Ella, the adventure begins with what’s often called the most scenic train ride in the world—and after taking it myself, I can confidently say it lives up to the hype. You’ll board the train in Kandy and ride all the way to Ella, weaving through rolling tea plantations, misty mountains, and cascading waterfalls. You can sit in your carriage… or do what most travelers do and hang out of the doors and windows, chasing that iconic shot as the landscape unfolds around you. It’s beyond breathtaking.
Once you arrive in Ella, the first thing you’ll notice is the cool mountain air and the instant sense of calm—which is perfect, because this is where the real adventure begins.
Nine Arch Bridge should be at the very top of your list. This stunning colonial-era bridge is tucked into lush tea plantations and is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights. Catching one of the famous blue trains rolling across it feels almost cinematic. While the view from above is beautiful, seeing it from below is even more impressive. The best viewpoints are from Asanka Café or down in the tea fields beneath the bridge.
After all that talk of tea, your next stop should be a tea plantation tour. I visited the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory, built in 1940 during British rule. Today, it’s one of the largest and most respected tea producers in Sri Lanka, known for its exceptional Ceylon tea. Don’t skip the gift shop—stock up on as many bags as you can. Trust me, you’ll regret not buying more.
Little Adam’s Peak is next, and it’s one of my favorite hikes in Ella. This relatively easy trail (about 1.5 hours round trip) rewards you with sweeping panoramic views over the Ella Gap. It’s accessible, scenic, and absolutely worth the effort.
Halfway up the trail, you’ll find Flying Ravana Adventure Park, home to one of the most thrilling experiences in town—a zip line that soars over tea plantations and rolling hills. This place was made for adrenaline lovers, and the zip line is non-negotiable.
Insider tip: While the hike is easy, the midday sun can be intense. Aim for sunrise or golden hour, and continue past the main viewpoint to find quieter spots most people never see.
One of my favorite things to do anywhere in Asia is rent a scooter, and Ella is no exception. Hop on and ride about four miles from town through winding roads and untouched forest to reach Ravana Falls, an 82-foot-high cascade that’s as powerful as it is beautiful.
Another waterfall that’s absolutely non-negotiable is Diyaluma Falls, the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. With its natural infinity pools, dramatic cliff edges, and jungle scrambling, it’s one of the most unforgettable experiences in the region.
Insider tip: Timing matters. Visit waterfalls early in the morning for fewer crowds, or just after rainfall for a stronger, more dramatic flow.
Places to eat & drink in Ella, Sri Lanka

Bees Honey Cookery & Restaurant is such a great local spot with inventive Sri Lankan and Asian cuisine.
Cafe Eden is a wonderfully charming café with excellent food and a relaxed atmosphere.
After hiking Little Adam’s Peak, make sure to stop at 98 Acres Resort and Spa for a refreshing drink and a snack with the most jaw-dropping views.
For the most authentic flavors, drop by The Clay Pot Ella for a modern twist on Sri Lankan food, which in my opinion is some of the best in the world!
Rocky Ella Cafe is a scenic cafe-bar that’ll get lively throughout the evening, perfect for a few drinks after a long day of adventuring.
Need to know
Start early (always): Ella runs on an early schedule. Sunrise hikes mean cooler temps, misty mountain views, and far fewer people. By late morning, popular spots like Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak get busy and hot.
Download offline maps: Cell service can be spotty once you leave town. Download Maps.me or Google Maps offline before heading out—especially if you’re hiking or visiting waterfalls.
You don’t need a guide for everything: Despite what you may hear, you can hike Little Adam’s Peak and Nine Arch Bridge without a guide.
Eat like a local: Skip the fancy menus and ask for rice and curry—you’ll usually get several dishes and some of the best food in town. Always ask for “less spicy” unless you really love heat.
