Advisor - Nice, France: Where to Stay, Savor & Explore
Curator’s statement

Nice makes the perfect home base for exploring the Côte d’Azur. With an international airport, a central train station, and easy access to both public and private transport, it’s incredibly well-connected—you can truly see and do it all from here. Unlike the postcard-perfect villages that surround it, Nice has a more international feel, with a mix of cultures, cuisines, and events that bring the city to life. It’s a larger city, yes, but each neighborhood has its own charm and local rhythm. The views stretch out in every direction, and the soft sunlight on the pastel buildings gives the city a glow that makes any hour of the day magical.

Things to do in Nice, France

Beach club Côte d'Azur

1) Cours Saleya Market and Liberation Market: The market at Cours Saleya is known for its rotating selection of local, gorgeous seasonal produce., local chèvre, and a variety of other delicious things to try. Don’t miss the socca and other Niçoise specialties from Thérèsa, located just across from Mamma Mia. Grab fresh watermelon or a pastry from Marionette. Insider tip: their hot chocolate will bring joy to the coldest of hearts.

Liberation Market offers a more local, everyday vibe. The fish market is one of the best in the area, known for its variety, freshness and friendly vendors that will filet on the spot! Just nearby, the renovated Gare du Sud has become a lively community hub with a self-serve restaurant, a food court, and a calendar full of events—from casual bingo nights to late-night dancing with local DJs. Insider tip: On the weekends, there are more vendors offering their selection of fresh produce and homemade goods.

2) Walk up to Colline du Chateau and have a bevy at the cafe Comptoir des Anges: There are two ways to ascend to the top of the Nice - the “back” or Portside or the stairs across from the Promenade des Anglais. The back is shady and winding offering views of the port while the front is steep steps and sunny and looks over the Bay of Anges with various places to stop for photo opps. Once you reach the top, there are ancient roman ruins, two cafes, people enjoying being outside year round and views for days. Insider tip: There is an elevator at the base for those who want the views without the effort.

3) Shop along Longchamp: Shopping in Nice is not Jean Medicine unless you love big, chain stores like Zara and Sephora. To me, boutique shopping and vintage stores are a bit more intersesting. The best spots for this are old town for vintage and local finds and for mid to high end boutiques try Rue Longchamp and Paradis and the streets around this area. Although you might enjoy Galleries Lafayette for a “has everything” department store appeal. Insider tip: Seasonal sales in January and September you can find great deals!

4) Spa day at Hotel du Covent: If you really want to treat yourself and indulge in an almost “spiritual experience” (Hotel du Covent is an old convent). The Hôtel du Couvent offers a unique wellness experience through its Roman Baths, inspired by ancient traditions. This subterranean spa features thermal rooms—tepidarium, caldarium, and frigidarium—designed to promote relaxation and rejuvenation. The spa also provides a range of treatments, including massages and facials, using natural products and techniques. Insider tip: Try booking in off-peak hours if you are not staying in the hotel.

5) Sunrise yoga: Among the many memorable ways to begin a morning on the Côte d’Azur, a sunrise yoga session on the beach offers a uniquely peaceful experience. Whether in a private class or a small group, practicing with the sound of the waves and the soft glow of the early light creates a calm, grounded start to the day—both restorative and unforgettable. Insider tip: Bring a bathing suit and rock shoes for a quick dip at the end of your class. You won’t regret it.

6) Rent a bike and ride along the Bay of Angels: One of the easiest (and most beautiful) ways to take in Nice is on two wheels. Rent a bike and cruise along the Promenade des Anglais, where the views of the Bay of Angels stretch endlessly beside you. It’s flat, easy to navigate, and perfect any time of day—but especially lovely in the morning or late afternoon when the light is golden and the breeze off the sea keeps things cool. Stop along the way for a coffee, a dip in the sea, or just to sit and take it all in. Insider tip: Lime and Pony Bikes are easy to rent and drop off along the Promenade and throughout the center of Nice.

7) Beach clubs: Even after living here, one of my favorite little luxuries is booking a lounge chair at one of Nice’s beach clubs. There’s nothing quite like having a front-row seat to the Mediterranean, with lunch (and maybe a glass of rosé) delivered by the effortlessly chic summer staff. Two of my go-to spots are Castel Plage and Amour Plage, with Le Galet as a close third.
Insider tip: Some clubs offer discounted half-day rates—perfect if you want to unwind by the sea after a long day of exploring.

8) Hop on a train to a nearby village: One of the best things about basing yourself in Nice is how easy it is to explore the stunning villages along the coast. Just hop on a train and in minutes you can be wandering the colorful streets of Villefranche-sur-Mer, climbing up to panoramic views in Èze, or soaking up the Riviera glamour of Monaco. It’s a stress-free way to explore—and the train ride itself, with those sea views, is part of the magic. Insider tip: Traveling in high season can feel like you are packed like sardines so make sure to arrive at least 20-30 minutes before your train to grab a seat.

Lunch at Movida with a local fave - Aperol Spritz

For the view

Le Bain de Castel: Literally built into the rocks of Rauba Capeu, this seafood-focused restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and specializes in fresh Mediterranean dishes. It's an excellent choice for a celebration or a romantic dinner.

Le Plongier: Le Plongeoir, an iconic Nice experience. Originally a fishing boat turned diving platform, it is now a unique restaurant perched on a rock overlooking the Mediterranean. With beautiful views and a menu of fresh, seasonal Mediterranean dishes, it’s a memorable spot for dining in Nice.

SEEN by Olivier: A rooftop restaurant atop the Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel is a chic venue that has stunning, panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the city, with a sophisticated setting for dining and cocktails.

For the cuisine

Jan: For an unparalleled dining experience in Nice, Restaurant JAN is it. Chef Jan Hendrik's Michelin-starred tasting menu blends South African roots with French sophistication, offering inventive dishes full of flavor and heart. From the intimate setting to the unforgettable cheese room, every detail is designed to surprise and inspire.

Bistro d’Antoine: If you're craving classic French comfort food in a lively, unpretentious setting, Bistrot d’Antoine is the place. Tucked into the heart of Old Town - this beloved local spot serves up rich, satisfying dishes like duck confit, daube Provençale, and perfectly seasoned tartare. It’s casual, cozy, and always full of locals - a true Niçios experience.

Lavomatique: Small but hip, with an open kitchen, this former laundromat-turned-tapas bar in Vieux Nice is not to be missed. Run by brothers Hugo and Grégoire Loubert, the ever-changing menu features inventive small plates like crispy panisse, house-made chorizo, and cider-marinated mackerel, all crafted from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Pair your meal with a selection from their natural wine list, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that makes Lavomatique a standout in Nice's dining scene.

Local favorites (mine)

La Chamade: Traditional and not so traditional Neapolitan style pizza. You can actually order by the meter. They have the favorites and also a handful or really unique flavors. Try the pumpkin or courgettes if you want something you’ll never forget!

Lou Pantail: A fancy restaurant that doesn’t act like a fancy restaurant and often hosts the likes of football famous. With a few TV's strategically placed so as not to be obtrusive, you can have an outstanding dining experience and also watch your favorite European team play the beautiful game. Follow their Insta account - its fun and showcases their specialties and a few celebs that dine there!

Spark: I’ve never been to a restaurant that brings people together quite like Spark. The food is divine—everything cooked in the wood-fired oven is made à la minute and simply melts in your mouth. Aiqing and Mike are incredibly warm, welcoming hosts, and it’s our favorite place to spend an evening. Tucked in the heart of the Old Town, it’s an absolute must.

Tacos and CO: Sometimes a girl just needs her Mexican fix, and this place more than delivers. From homemade salsas and perfectly mixed margaritas to authentic entrées and next-level desserts (the owner is an award-winning pastry chef), it’s a full-on flavor trip that hits all the right notes.

Fun places for a drink

La Cave du Cours: A cozy, cave-like wine bar in Vieux Nice and is our favorite place to go on a Friday evening. Open only Thursday through Saturday evenings, you can browse their shelves to choose from an impressive selection of natural and biodynamic wines. Each drink comes with complimentary small plates—think house-made pâté, goat cheese with olive oil and rosemary, or slices of coppa—served generously throughout the evening. It fills up quickly, so go early - they open at 6pm.

Pompette: Located on Rue Bonaparte - a vibrant area full of boutiques and restaurants, this is a favorite spot for a wind down evening. With a small but tasty tapas menu to an impressive wine and cocktail list and friendly service - this is a great place for visitors and locals to share.

Movida: Right across from the Promenade, this spot has it all: stunning views, great music, and a vibrant atmosphere that keeps the energy flowing pretty much all day long. Perfect for apero “French Happy Hour” and people-watching, great snacks, and soaking up the Nice vibe.

Need to know

Though I haven’t focused much on ethnic cuisine, Nice stands out on the Côte d’Azur for offering almost any flavor you might crave—from Thai and Vietnamese to Indian, Algerian, Moroccan, Georgian, and more. The locals here are genuinely friendly, and a simple “Bonjour” when you enter a restaurant or boutique will almost always earn you a warm smile in return. For anyone interested in diving into local cooking, Les Petits Farcis is the place to be—Rosa Jackson, author and chef, leads daily classes filled with authentic flavors. And for daily or curated market tours, food and hiking adventures, or private yoga, Nice By Day (yours truly) is here to guide you through the best of the city and beyond.
