Day 1: Pools & a pub
Look for tiny crabs, graceful sea anemones, and starfish in the tide pools!
Upon arrival in Doolin, a walk to the waterfront is in order to take in views of the impressive Cliffs of Moher. At low tide, bring your swimsuit for a dip in the public swimming pool, or walk along the rocks to see what’s swimming in the tidal pools. On your way back to your hotel, grab a pint and dinner at Gus O’Connor’s Pub (reservations recommended).
Day 2: Aran Islands
See the most by a Pony and Trap tour. Be sure to bring cash!
Two of the three Aran Islands are accessible by ferry, and both are a treat to see. The largest of the three (Inis Mor) is perfect for a full day: take the early ferry there and the late ferry back. The smallest, Inis Oírr, is better suited to a half-day trip. On either island, explore by van, bicycle, or the traditional way—via a Pony and Trap tour!
Day 3: Cliffs of Moher

On your last full day in Doolin, head up to the Cliffs of Moher. One great idea is to take the bus to the visitor center, then hike back to town along a gloriously scenic footpath. Another option—especially nice in very hot or rainy weather—is to drive, explore on foot, and then head to the Doolin dock, where you can join a tour to see the majestic cliffs from the water.
Day 4: Scones & donkeys & docks, oh my!
My husband and I enjoyed making scones at Rathbaun Farm.
As you depart Doolin, join a scone-making experience at Rathbaun Farm (advance registration required)! Drive through the dramatic Burren National Park, perhaps stopping for a quick hike, before arriving at Rathbaun Farm. If you’re lucky, the resident donkeys will greet you on arrival, but you are sure to meet a number of sheep during your visit. After learning the secret technique to the perfect scone, enjoy tea with your very own freshly baked scone with house-made jam and butter!
Need to know
While you can access Doolin by public transportation, hiring a car is a much more efficient way to see the area—and it's a necessity if you decide to add Rathbaun Farm to your trip.
The hotels in the area do not have air conditioning, as the weather is usually cool and often drizzly. In warm weather, opening windows for a cross-breeze and taking advantage of the hotel fans is a must.
