Advisor - Out and About in Provincetown
Curator’s statement

Located at the very tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown (or Ptown for short) has long been a favorite destination among artists and the LGBTQ community seeking escape from the everyday hustle and bustle. Every year, thousands flock to Ptown to soak in its natural beauty, check out its many art galleries, catch a live show, or simply spend time with cherished friends and family. Having spent many a summer getting to know this charming seaside retreat, I’ve put together some of my favorite places to ensure you have a fabulous time, whether it’s a long weekend or an extended stay.

Things to do in Provincetown

Boatslip Tea is where to see and be seen every afternoon

Take in Commercial Street

Commercial Street, which winds its way through the center of town, is the beating heart of Ptown. Along the street, you’ll find a mix of everything, including local shops, art galleries, restaurants, and performers. It’s not uncommon to find musicians busking in front of town hall, or drag queens promoting their shows as folks pass by.

Bike trails and beaches

Rent a bike and cruise along the trails of Cape Cod National Seashore to take in the natural beauty of the cape. Race Point Beach offers stunning views of the ocean, while Herring Cove Beach offers a quieter, more accessible beach closer to town. Ptown also offers plenty of bike lanes and racks to making biking around town the preferred option by locals and tourists alike.

Soak up the sun

Trek out to Boy Beach, the popular gay nude beach, to bask in the sun while checking out fellow tourists and locals alike. If you prefer a pool, both the Provincetown Inn and Boatslip Resort offer opportunities to relax poolside with cocktails in hand.

See you at tea

No trip to Ptown is complete without hitting up the Boatslip Resort for its world-famous tea dance, held every day from 4 to 7 pm. It’s the place to mix and mingle with fellow travelers over a Planter’s Punch to debrief the day and make plans for the night ahead, as well as check out stunning sunset views over Provincetown Harbor.

Dance the night away

When the sun goes down, the party doesn’t stop. There are lots of places to keep the party energy going into the night, from getting a fireside drink at Shipwreck Lounge to dancing to pop hits at Wave Bar at Crown & Anchor or losing yourself under the disco ball at Atlantic House (A-House for short). One thing’s for sure: everyone always ends up at Spiritus Pizza for a late-night slice.

Places to eat & drink in Provincetown

Seared scallops over risotto at The Red Inn

Canteen

A fast-casual option that’s famous for its lobster rolls and frosé. Be sure to also check out the back patio—with views of the harbor and beachy vibes, it's sure to put you in that perfect summer mood.

Sal’s

Sal’s serves up classic Italian favorites in a cozy, family atmosphere (think linguine with clams or chicken parmigiana). Reservations are highly recommended.

The Red Inn

Located at the far end of town, The Red Inn is known for its creative cocktails and daily happy hour specials, including kobe sliders and oysters. And don’t forget to save room for their signature peanut butter pie dessert.

Liz’s Cafe

This diner is known for its brunch staples (including a can’t-miss corned beef hash), but also doubles as a great place for a low-key dinner off the hustle and bustle of Commercial Street.

Pop & Dutch

One of the best sandwich shops in Ptown. Everything they sell is made to order and super fresh. Be sure to order a tomato sandwich near the end of summer, best enjoyed while soaking up the sun at the beach.

Harbor Lounge

“No food, just drinks” is the motto for this cocktail lounge overlooking Provincetown Harbor on the east end. A great place for midday drinks and to connect with friends in a low-key, convivial atmosphere.

Need to know

While most places now take credit cards, many businesses still remain cash only, so be sure to hit up the ATM before or during your stay to ensure you’re not caught off guard.
