Curator’s statement
Anchorage is where wild, untouched nature meets a surprisingly vibrant city scene. As a flight attendant, I fly this route mostly. And it’s one of my favorite places to explore. It’s one of those rare destinations where you can see glaciers, spot a lot of wildlife, and enjoy great seafood all in the same day. Whether you visit during the endless daylight of summer or during the magical Northern Lights season, Anchorage feels so magical.

Things to do in Anchorage

Matanuska Glacier Hike
Bike the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail: One of the most scenic bike rides in the U.S., this coastal trail offers stunning views of Cook Inlet, Denali on clear days, and even the chance to spot moose along the path (chances are you will definitely see some wildlife on this trail)
Take a Glacier Tour (Matanuska or Prince William Sound): Whether you choose to walk on the Matanuska Glacier or cruise through Prince William Sound, experiencing glaciers up close is absolutely unforgettable.
Ride the Alaska Railroad: The Alaska Railroad offers breathtaking routes through mountains, rivers, and wildlife-filled landscapes—especially the journey from Anchorage to Seward.
Go wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for moose, bald eagles, and even bears in and around Anchorage—yes, even within city limits.
Experience the Northern Lights (Seasonal): From late fall through early spring, Anchorage becomes one of the best places in the U.S. to witness the aurora borealis dancing across the sky.
Visit Palmers Reindeer farm: Home to reindeer, Rocky Mountain elk, bison, Tibetan yaks, alpacas, and even Moose, they offer a unique chance to connect face-to-face with these animals.
Places to eat & drink in Anchorage

Moose's Tooth Pizza
Glacier Brewhouse: Great for wood-fired seafood and house-brewed beer, this is a must for a casual but memorable meal.
49th State Brewing Company: Lively atmosphere, rooftop views, and locally brewed beers—perfect after a day of exploring. It can get very busy during the summer months.
F Street Station: By far the best Halibut you’ll ever eat and pairs so well with their homemade french onion soup.
Moose’s Tooth Pub & Pizzeria: Voted one of the best pizzerias in the U.S. Awesome selection of crafted in-house local beers.
10th & M Seafoods: Want to bring all that great seafood back home with you? I recommend 10th & M, a worldwide reputation for custom processing services, packaging and shipping right to your door.
Need to know
Best time to visit: Summer (June–August) offers long daylight hours and ideal weather. Winter (November–March) is best for Northern Lights and snow activities.
Daylight is wild: In summer, the sun barely sets—pack a sleep mask. In winter, expect limited daylight but magical snowy landscapes.
Dress in layers: Weather can change quickly, even in summer. Layers are essential year-round.
Be aware of Alaska’s “mudflats” incredibly dangerous, glacial-silt, quicksand-like traps that can trap a person within seconds. Extremely Deceptive Surface. Not enough caution signage for tourist
Wildlife awareness: Always keep a safe distance from wildlife—especially moose and bears.
It’s a gateway destination: Anchorage is often the starting point for exploring places like Denali National Park or the Kenai Peninsula—plan extra time if you can.
