Curator’s statement

Rio de Janeiro was the last stop on our South America itinerary—and one that left a lasting impact. This city immediately captivated us with its energy, vibrancy, and incredible views around every turn. As active travelers who love to experience a new destination through movement, Rio de Janeiro was the perfect fit—and one we can see ourselves returning to again and again.

Things to do in Rio de Janeiro

Experience a sunrise hike

The 3 am wake-up call might seem impossible, but believe me when I say this cannot be missed. Rio de Janeiro is known for its spectacular sunrises, and it truly did not disappoint. We visited Mirante Dona Marta, which provided panoramic views of the city, the bay, and Christ the Redeemer. The Dois Irmãos hike is another popular choice for unforgettable sunrise views.

Take a surf lesson

Praia do Arpoador is a perfect spot for beginner surf lessons, thanks to its relatively gentle waves and sandy bottom. We signed up for a lesson through Mandala Rio Surf School and had such a fun time. It was our first time surfing, and even though it was challenging, it was incredible to have an experience like this in a place like Rio. A professional photographer was on the beach, and we were able to download photos afterward—the perfect souvenir.

Reserve a private boat charter

Guanabara Bay is one of the largest bays in the world and is often cited among the most beautiful natural harbors globally. Surrounded by lush green mountains and iconic landmarks, it provided a stunning backdrop for a private sunset charter.

Enjoy local live music

Rio de Janeiro is bursting with live music, much of which we discovered simply by walking down the sidewalk. Our hotel, Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana, featured local performances every afternoon and evening. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to Angu do Gomes on a Friday night for a more local experience.

Places to eat & drink in Rio de Janeiro

  • Sushi Leblon: Brazil is home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan, so definitely make time for a sushi stop while you’re here.

  • Zazá Bistrô Tropical: One of our favorite spots on our 10-day trip, with an inventive and creative menu featuring fresh, local flavors.

  • Malta Beef Club: For a classic, award-winning steakhouse, check out one of the two Malta Beef Club locations. This spot is cozy and upscale—not a traditional churrascaria.

  • Nusa Café: A colorful breakfast and lunch spot with fresh, beautifully prepared plates.

  • Gino Restaurante Italiano: After more than a week in South America, when we had our fill of beef, a pizza and salad from Gino hit the spot.

Need to know

If you’re planning a trip to Brazil, carve out at least four days for Rio de Janeiro—and come ready to move. Between the beaches, the hikes, the food, and the music, this city offers a dynamic experience that feels both iconic and refreshingly authentic.
