Hike

Since most of Alaska is not developed, it has some incredible trails to explore! If you’re looking for something challenging for a day hike, summit Mt. Healy in Denali National Park. If you’re looking for something easier that also has a glacier, Exit Glacier near Seward was a good stop.

Fishing

We went on a guided fishing trip for sockeye salmon and had a blast! Before booking your trip, if you want to go fishing for a specific type of fish, make sure that it is in season.

Bus tour of Denali

Cannot recommend this enough. At this point, this is pretty much the only way to see the park past mile 15. We were able to see the big four (grizzly, moose, caribou, and Dall sheep), and they provided a guide who knew about the area and the park!

Boat tour of Kenai Fjords

Cannot recommend this experience enough! Getting to see all the marine life with the fjords as a backdrop was something out of a dream.

Alaska First Nations Museum

An absolute must if you are spending any time in Anchorage. The museum was easy to get to, and everyone who worked there was so friendly. They have exhibits, but also live demonstrations about traditional games and dance. These were my favorite! It was wonderful to see their culture and interact with those who are trying to revive traditions. The exhibits were extremely informative of the Native experience and history, and there was a guided tour you could take with more information about the way of life of their ancestors.

Sled dog demo or rides

Denali National Park has a sled dog demonstration daily that you can attend for free. You get to meet the dogs and see them do their jobs—it was great for families and those that love pups. During the winter is when sled dog tours are available throughout the state, and they are a cool way to experience the winter wonderland.

• Basil Ginger: Sushi was top-notch! All the food was fresh, and the location made it easy to get to if you’re traveling out of Anchorage to the north.

• Panorama Pizza: Located right next to our cabin, this was a wonderful place to unwind after a day at the national park. The portions were large and the pizza was hot.

• 49th State Brewing: Yum! All the beers I tried were phenomenal, and the burger was insanely good! Huge space with lots of seating and a great stop to make.

• Ray’s: Best seafood I have ever had! With easy access to the fresh catch of the day, this was a wonderful spot for a good seafood dinner.

• Creekside Bakery: Not far from Denali National Park, this place was a great option for breakfast. Highly recommend the “Alaskan” cinnamon roll.

• Coho Joes Dockside Coffee: Probably the best coffee I had all trip. Located right on the harbor in Seward made for an easy cup while waiting for our boat tour.
