Advisor - Summit to Shore: The Banff Playbook
Curator’s statement

Banff pulled me in from the start, everywhere you turn, the scenery feels larger than life. We chased turquoise lakes, soaked in sweeping mountain views, and found that Banff is the kind of place that leaves you both exhausted and completely recharged. It’s the perfect mix of thrill and beauty, and it’s impossible not to fall in love with it.

Things to do in Banff

View from the half way point climbing up on the Via Ferrata

  • Via Ferrata at Mt. Norquay: Clipping into the iron rungs high above Banff is equal parts thrill and reward. The views stretch across the valley and mountains, and it’s one of the most unique ways to experience Banff’s rugged cliffs.

  • Grassi Lakes Hike: A short but scenic trail in Canmore that leads to two bright turquoise lakes tucked against the mountains. It’s the kind of hike that makes you stop every few minutes just to take in the colors.

  • Lake Louise, Big Beehive & Tea House Hike: Start with the classic Lake Louise view, then head up past Mirror Lake and the Lake Agnes Tea House. The push to Big Beehive is worth it for the sweeping, postcard-perfect views over the entire lake.

  • Canoe down the Bow River: A peaceful paddle surrounded by mountain peaks and wildlife. Whether you’re looking for calm moments or a little arm workout, it’s the perfect way to see Banff from the water.

  • Canmore Nordic Centre: Known for world-class cross-country skiing in the winter, this spot also has great mountain biking and hiking trails in the summer. It’s a fun way to mix up your adventure days with something different.

Places to eat & drink in Banff

  • The Wood, Canmore: Perfect outside patio, and the food was amazing. Hands down the best meal of the trip.

  • Three Bears Brewery, Banff: Stunning vibes, killer drinks, and warm service. Great spot when you want craft beers, elevated comfort food, and a relaxed atmosphere that still feels elevated.

  • Cows’ Ice Cream: Because how can you go somewhere and not have ice cream? A sweet treat stop that’s perfect after a long hike or when you’re wandering downtown. Fun, casual, and oh so satisfying.

  • Lake Agnes Tea House: Such a fun and memorable stop. We got there early to avoid the line, enjoyed snacks and tea, and soaked up the mountain-lake views. Feels like stepping into a different pace.

  • Sky Bistro (on Sulphur Mountain): If you want somewhere special and memorable, this is your spot. Take the gondola up Sulphur Mountain and dine with huge views of the Rockies. The food is regionally inspired, really good, and the setting makes the whole experience feel elevated.

Need to know

  • Park pass required: You’ll need a Parks Canada pass to enter Banff National Park—you can buy online ahead of time or at the park’s gates.

  • Early starts pay off: Popular hikes and lakes (like Lake Louise & Moraine Lake) fill up fast. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds and snag parking.

  • Bear safety: Carry bear spray on hikes and know how to use it. Most encounters are avoidable if you make noise on the trail.

Favorite hikes

  • Grassi Lakes: This is in Canmore and is a must. It’s a one-mile climb up to see the lakes, but worth every step. There is a beautiful waterfall view all the way up, and then two crystal clear lakes at the top.

  • The Big Beehive Hike: Lake Louise is absolutely stunning. Pretty popular trail, has some steep parts but nothing too challenging.

  • Barrier Lake Trail: Another beautiful hike, fairly flat until you climb up to the waterfall, but you spend most of your time down by the lake looking up at the mountains.

  • Tunnel Mountain Summit: A great hike if you are near downtown Banff and want to get in some vertical climbing for great views of Bow River and the valley. About three miles round-trip.
