Curator’s statement

Nestled one hour south of Florence, Siena provides all the trademarks of a charming Tuscan city, with a much smaller population. You’ll visit historic cathedrals, indulge in classic culinary delights, peruse local markets and taste the finest Italian wines. Looking for the quintessential rolling green hills of Tuscany? They’re waiting just outside the city, providing the perfect Italian vacation.

Things to do in Siena, Italy

A stall of fruits and spices.

Shop the Siena Market

Every Wednesday from 8am to 1:30pm, Sienese locals flock to the outdoor market, called the Mercato delle Merci. Unlike the markets of Florence that cater to tourists, the Mercato delle Merci is a traditional market with stalls of local farmers, producers and makers. As the market is one of the largest in Tuscany, you won’t miss it, stretching from Fortezza Medicea to Viale XXV Apriale. Pro tip: If you’re driving in, park at the Santa Caterina parking lot, then take the escalators up into town. Trying to drive directly to the city of Siena (it’s shopping district enclosed in medieval stone walls) will likely have you stuck in traffic.

Visit the Duomo di Siena

Of course, as with a trip to any Italian city, the cathedral is a must-visit. Canonically, cathedrals are famed for their architecture and stained glass windows. The Duomo di Siena has a unique key feature – mosaics. The entire floor of the cathedral is filled with intricately designed laid mosaics, extending up the walls. The columns of the cathedral are a striking black and white pattern. For it’s artistry and innovation, the Duomo di Siena is one of the most incredible cathedrals I’ve seen in all of Europe.

Soar over Tuscany in a Hot Air Balloon

Up for an airborne adventure? Soak in the beauty of Tuscany’s rolling hills in a hot air balloon. Take a one-hour flight from Siena to indulge in a breathtaking view of Tuscany’s stunning landscape adorned with grapevines and ancient villas. Soar at 2,000 feet for a commanding view of the countryside and charming villages. Celebrate a successful trip with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine.

Pick olives in the Chianti Hills

Discover the heart of Italy's charming Chianti region with an olive picking experience. Wander through sun-drenched olive groves while learning ancient olive-picking techniques. After the harvest, savor an aperitivo crafted with local ingredients. Take home freshly pressed olive oil, a symbol of Tuscany's culinary heritage.

Cook classic Tuscan dishes complete with a traditional opera experience

Experience the charm of the Tuscan countryside with an authentic Italian cooking class. Learn the art of crafting traditional homemade pasta and desserts using garden-fresh ingredients. After preparing your dishes, enjoy a delightful meal at the host’s dining accompanied by a live Italian Opera performance.

Highlights include the picturesque Tuscan setting and a sommelier-hosted exploration of Prosecco and olive oil.

Osteria La Montagnola - Tegoia, Siena

Located outside the city center in the Tuscan countryside, Osteria La Montagnola is worth the drive. Enjoy a sprawling view while you enjoy local fare. This restaurant was one of my personal favorites from my recent Tuscany trip.

Ristorante San Domenico - Gluten-Free

Though it may seem unexpected, Italy is extremely accommodating to those with celiac disease. Ristorante San Domenico is a highly rated classic Tuscan restaurant located in the heart of Siena.

Osteria il Vinaio - Siena

Located in the city center, Osteria il Vinaio serves up classic Tuscan comfort dishes. For a classic experience, plan to spend a few hours enjoying your multiple course meal. Accompanied by local wine, of course.
