Things to do in Antwerp

Antwerp Central Station: One of the most beautiful train stations in Europe, this architectural gem is worth visiting even if you’re not catching a train. Don’t forget to look up at the stunning dome ceiling!

Plopsa Station, Antwerp: A fun, indoor amusement park designed especially for younger children, themed around popular Belgian cartoon characters. Great for rainy days and conveniently located inside the train station complex.

Chocolate Nation: A must for chocolate lovers! This interactive museum takes you through the history, culture, and production of Belgian chocolate—with plenty of tastings included.

Stadsfeestzaal: A glamorous shopping center inside a restored 19th-century ballroom. Gold ceilings, chandeliers, and boutiques make it a unique and beautiful place to browse or grab a snack.

The Meir: Antwerp’s main shopping street, lined with both international brands and Belgian shops. Great for people-watching, souvenir hunting, or just taking a stroll through the heart of the city.

Cathedral of Our Lady: A UNESCO World Heritage site and home to several paintings by Rubens, this Gothic cathedral is breathtaking inside and out. It’s a quiet and awe-inspiring place to explore.

The Nello & Patrasche Statue: A touching tribute to the beloved characters from the book A Dog of Flanders. The sculpture lies just outside the cathedral and makes for a meaningful photo stop.

Places to eat & drink in Antwerp

Umi Sushi: Located in the heart of historic Antwerp, Umi Sushi offers a delightful fusion of fresh sushi and warm, flavorful curries. The restaurant boasts a sleek, minimalist decor complemented by bamboo accents and artistic motifs, creating a tranquil and stylish ambiance. It’s an ideal spot for a midscale dinner or special celebration. I celebrated my daughter’s 18th birthday here with a large party, and the staff were incredibly accommodating, ensuring a memorable experience for everyone. Price range: Most mains are between €15–€22 ($16–$24)

Takumi Groenplaats Antwerpen: With a cool, hip, and laidback atmosphere, this ramen spot serves hearty bowls in many flavor combos. You’ll also find gyoza, teriyaki chicken skewers, fried pumpkin croquettes, and other fun side dishes to share. Price range: €€ – Ramen bowls average €14–€17 ($15–$19), small plates around €5 ($5.50).

Chez Albert Antwerpen: Located inside Antwerpen-Centraal station, Chez Albert is known for quick, delicious Belgian waffles. With a variety of topping options, it’s an easy, on-the-go treat that’s a hit with kids and adults alike. Price range: Waffles range from €3.50–€6 ($4–$6.50).

McDonald’s on Meir: A surprising family favorite! This central McDonald’s feels like a fun twist on a classic. The kids loved seeing menu items and Happy Meal toys not available in the States, and we all got a kick out of learning that 16-year-olds can legally order a beer with their meal in Belgium. It features two stories of seating plus outdoor tables. Don’t forget to toss your trash in one of the hilariously encouraging trash cans! Price range: Standard fast-food pricing; most meals are under €10 ($11).

Frites Atelier – A gourmet fry shop that still works on a family budget. Created by a Michelin-starred chef, it offers crisp Belgian frites with unique sauces and toppings. A fun, quick stop while walking around the city center. Price range: Specialty fries start around €6 ($6.50), while combos with toppings and drinks can run €10–€15 ($11–$16.50)

Bakkerij Goossens: One of Antwerp’s oldest and most beloved bakeries, serving fresh breads and traditional sweets like speculaas (a traditional Dutch and Belgian spiced biscuit cookie). Great for grabbing breakfast or an affordable mid-day treat to go. Price range: Most items are under €5 ($5.50)

Need to know

Locations are walkable from the Antwerp Central Station, so wear good walking shoes!

Remember to carry some euro coins for public restrooms (toilets) as it is a pay service, some locations can take cards. You can find public restrooms at Central Station and Stadsfeestzaal. Also, Google the tourist page for Antwerp to find additional locations and pricing.
