Things to do in Maui

An early wake-up call led to one of the most unforgettable moments of our Maui trip. Watching the sun rise above the clouds at Haleakalā National Park is an experience that simply can't be captured in a photo—it's a memory you'll never forget.

Spend time enjoying Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

The Four Seasons Resort Maui is more than just a place to stay—it's a destination in itself. We loved slowing down between adventures by enjoying the beautiful pools, exceptional service, oceanfront views, and world-class dining. If your schedule allows, plan a few unstructured hours to simply enjoy the resort instead of feeling like you need to be sightseeing every moment.

Walk the Wailea Beach Path

The Wailea Beach Path quickly became one of our favorite parts of each day. This scenic oceanfront walkway connects several of Wailea's luxury resorts and offers beautiful views of the coastline, especially around sunrise and sunset. Keep an eye on the water—you may even spot sea turtles or, during the winter months, humpback whales offshore.

Experience sunrise at Haleakalā National Park

Watching the sunrise from above the clouds at Haleakalā National Park is one of those bucket-list experiences that truly lives up to the hype. After sunrise, stay awhile to explore the overlooks or hike one of the trails through the volcanic landscape before the crowds head back down the mountain.

Drive the Road to Hāna with the Shaka Guide App

The Road to Hāna is one of Maui's most iconic adventures, and the Shaka Guide app made the experience significantly better. The GPS-guided narration shares Hawaiian history, local stories, and recommendations for worthwhile stops, helping you enjoy the drive without constantly wondering what to see next.

Indulge at the Four Seasons spa

If relaxation is part of your vacation goals, the spa at Four Seasons Maui is well worth the splurge. The peaceful atmosphere and exceptional service made it one of the most relaxing experiences of our trip and the perfect complement to our more adventurous days.

Explore The Shops at Wailea

Located just a short walk from the Four Seasons, The Shops at Wailea are a great place to browse local boutiques, luxury brands, art galleries, and specialty shops. It's also a convenient stop for coffee, a casual meal, or an evening stroll after dinner.

Places to eat & drink in Maui

Dinner at Spago is memorable for the food—but the sunset stealing the show isn't a bad bonus either.

Monkeypod Kitchen

Monkeypod was one of our favorite casual meals in Maui and a restaurant we'd happily return to. The atmosphere is lively, the menu has something for everyone, and the famous lilikoi foam Mai Tai lives up to the hype. If you're gluten-free, there are plenty of options, making it an easy choice for groups with different dietary needs.

Lineage

Lineage quickly became one of the culinary highlights of our trip. Inspired by the diverse cultures that have shaped Hawaii, every dish is designed to be shared, making it a fun and memorable dining experience for couples or groups. While gluten-free dining requires a bit more guidance from your server, the staff was knowledgeable and helped us identify safe options, making it well worth the visit for its unique flavors and creative menu.

KōMO at Four Seasons Resort Maui

Located inside the Four Seasons, KōMO delivers an elevated dining experience with exceptional service and beautifully prepared dishes featuring local Hawaiian ingredients. If you're feeling adventurous, order the Mystery Box—a chef-curated surprise featuring seasonal ingredients that isn't listed on the menu. It's a unique dining experience that was one of the most memorable meals of our trip, and the restaurant offers several excellent gluten-free options, with staff happy to accommodate dietary needs.

Spago Maui

Wolfgang Puck's Spago combines fine dining with one of the best sunset settings in Wailea. The open-air terrace overlooking the ocean creates a spectacular backdrop for dinner, while the menu highlights fresh seafood and locally inspired flavors. Those dining gluten-free will find several thoughtfully prepared options, and the staff is knowledgeable about dietary restrictions, making it easy to enjoy a special meal without compromise. Reservations around sunset are well worth planning in advance.

Four Seasons lobby lounge

Even if you're not staying at the resort, the Four Seasons lobby lounge is worth a visit for handcrafted cocktails, live music, and panoramic ocean views. We loved ending the evening here while watching the sky change colors after sunset, but the real surprise was the Chocolate Martini. Unlike a traditional dessert cocktail, this version is light, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable—one of the best cocktails we enjoyed in Maui. It's the perfect place to slow down and soak in the island atmosphere.

DUO Steak & Seafood (Breakfast)

Breakfast at DUO became one of our favorite ways to start the day. You can choose between an impressive breakfast buffet—featuring fresh tropical fruit, made-to-order favorites, pastries, and multiple clearly labeled gluten-free options—or order à la carte if you prefer. The exceptional service and beautiful open-air setting overlooking the gardens and ocean made every breakfast feel like a relaxing part of the vacation, and if breakfast is included with your stay, it's an experience you won't want to miss.

Hana Ranch Restaurant

After spending the morning exploring the Road to Hāna, Hana Ranch Restaurant was the perfect place to relax and enjoy a hearty meal. With scenic views of the surrounding hills and a casual, welcoming atmosphere, it's a great stop before making the drive back to Wailea. We also appreciated that they offered gluten-free options, making it an easy recommendation for travelers with dietary restrictions.

Four Seasons adult pool grill

For a relaxed poolside lunch, the Four Seasons adult pool grill exceeded our expectations. We loved the gluten-free mahi mahi wrap so much that we ordered it multiple times during our stay—it was fresh, flavorful, and the perfect light meal between lounging by the pool and enjoying the Maui sunshine. The menu offers several other gluten-free options as well, making it an easy and delicious choice for a carefree afternoon at the resort.

Need to know

  • Reserve popular experiences early. Book your Haleakalā sunrise reservation as soon as your travel dates are confirmed, and make dinner reservations well in advance—especially for Spago and other restaurants with sunset views.

  • Plan ahead for your Haleakalā sunrise. Leave your hotel very early and arrive at the summit at least one hour before sunrise to secure parking and enjoy the changing colors before the sun rises. Since you'll be ascending to over 10,000 feet above sea level, it's normal to notice the effects of the altitude, including shortness of breath or mild lightheadedness. Take it slow, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity until you've had time to adjust. Be sure to pack warm layers as temperatures at the summit can be surprisingly cold—even when it's warm at the beach.

  • Staying at the Four Seasons? Take advantage of the resort's amenities. Order a to-go room service breakfast for your early departure to Haleakalā, and use the complimentary house car for transportation around the Wailea area for shopping or dinner reservations (subject to availability). After your sunrise adventure, head back to the resort for a relaxing afternoon by the adults-only pool, and don't miss lunch from the pool grill—the gluten-free mahi mahi wrap became one of our favorite meals of the trip.

  • Download the Shaka Guide app before driving the Road to Hāna. It was one of the best additions to our trip, providing GPS-guided narration, local history, and recommendations for worthwhile stops without needing to constantly check a map.

  • Don't let the weather change your plans. It rained nearly the entire day during our Road to Hāna drive, but that also meant the waterfalls were absolutely spectacular. Pack a lightweight rain jacket and embrace whatever the island gives you.

  • Rent a car if you plan to explore the island. While Wailea is very walkable, having your own vehicle makes it easy to experience Haleakalā National Park, the Road to Hāna, and other areas of Maui at your own pace.

  • Slow down and enjoy Maui. It's tempting to fill every day with activities, but some of our favorite memories came from simply enjoying the Four Seasons, walking the Wailea Beach Path, lingering over great meals, and taking in the incredible ocean views. Maui is best experienced at an unhurried pace.

  • Respect Hawaii's natural beauty and wildlife. If you're lucky enough to spot sea turtles or Hawaiian monk seals, admire them from a safe distance and follow all posted guidelines. Helping preserve Maui's incredible landscapes ensures future travelers can enjoy them just as much.
