Things to do in Cape Town

Camps Bay Beach, Christmas Day 2024

Take the cable car up Table Mountain: A must-do! See The Mother City from above. Book “Fast Track” tickets to skip the line.

Visit the penguins at Boulders Beach: The colony of African penguins is absolutely adorable, and the beach is beautiful. This is fun for all ages, and you can even swim near the penguins!

Hire a driver or take a tour to the Cape Winelands: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and/or Paarl offer stunning scenery, world-class wine and fantastic food. There are wine tours to join, or an advisor can certainly arrange the perfect day here.

Walk or bike the Sea Point Promenade: Take advantage of the year-round Mediterranean climate for a little exercise. A flat, scenic coastal path perfect for a relaxed morning or sunset stroll with locals, ocean views and snack stops along the way.

Explore the V&A Waterfront: A one-stop-shop for shopping, restaurants, markets and museums — great for people-watching or catching a boat tour.

Spend a day at Camps Bay Beach: Camps Bay Beach is an ideal place to spend a day. There is white sand, crystal clear (and cold!) water and a variety of cafes along Victoria Road. Rent a couple of beach chairs and an umbrella and post up for a stunning day framed by the Twelve Apostles.

Relax before or after safari: Cape Town is best paired with a safari in Kruger National Park, and it’s a perfect spot to ease in or wind down. Spend a few days relaxing, dining well and enjoying the coastal scenery.

Places to eat & drink in Cape Town

Some of the fresh shellfish on offer at The Codfather

The Codfather (Camps Bay): Pick your seafood or sushi from the counter and enjoy it fresh off the grill. Simple and fantastic — easily one of my favorite seafood restaurants in the world!

Haiku Cape Town (City Centre): Moody spot for excellent dim sum.

The Test Kitchen Fledglings (Woodstock): The original Cape Town dining mecca, casual but excellent.

Kloof Street House (Gardens): Beautiful and delicious with an amazing atmosphere. Great cocktails!

La Colombe (Constantia): A multi-course fine dining experience. Elegant and amazing, reservations a must.

Need to know

Cape Town is easy to get around, and Ubers are cheap and plentiful. For full-day outings like the Winelands or Cape of Good Hope, hiring a private driver is highly recommended. As with any major city, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings and steer clear of unfamiliar neighborhoods after dark. It’s not recommended to venture into townships or outlying areas without a trusted guide or organized tour, but otherwise Cape Town is and feels like a very safe city.

The weather, the exchange rate, the ease of navigating around as an English speaker, the jaw-dropping beauty, access to so many adventures and the volume of amazing hotels truly make Cape Town a destination for everyone!
