Curator’s statement
Madeira is one of Europe's best kept secrets located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco. This small island is actually an autonomous region of Portugal and is about 35 miles in length. My husband and I went as part of a two week Portugal/Spain trip and it was by far my favorite stop. I loved Madeira because it is the perfect blend of adventure, nature and relaxation. My biggest regret is not spending more time on the island and I have not been able to stop thinking about it! The temperatures are great year round with the best time to visit May-October if you are looking for warmer weather. We traveled in the beginning of October and were still able to enjoy time at beach/in water as well as hike in comfortable temperatures.

Things to do in Madeira

Dolphin/whale tour: We used the company Rota Dos Cetaceos which was such a fun experience from the education before, boat ride, dolphin sighting and information about the species we saw.
Hike Pico to Pico: I would rate this hike as challenging, we opted to do the sunrise hike which was amazing. You are able to park and plan this hike on your own but it gets very crowded so we used a tour guide who provided transportation and information (Do It Madeira). On the drive, the tour guide gave us helping information regarding history, fun facts and food. Tip: bring warm clothes for this hike as it VERY cold at the top.
Tour the Monte Palace: Botanical gardens that you will need tickets for.
PR6 25 Fontes hike
Porto Moniz Natural Pools: Costs about three euros for entry, these are shallow pools carved into the rocks with areas for sunbathing.
Seixtal beach: Black sand beach in a cliffside town.
Explore Rua de Santa Maria: Shopping street.
Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco: Moderate heights that go over a few different viewpoints.
Take a cable car to Monte from Almirante Reis for a view.
Faial: Small picturesque village.
Places to eat & drink in Madeira

Chalet Vincente: Make sure to order poncha and espetada (meat on skewer).
Ojango: Order espada (scabbard fish) or espetada.
Maktub: Pub with outdoor seating and live music.
Cafe de Teatro: Coffeehouse
Pao e Companhia: The BEST and cheapest pastel de natas you will find (tip: euros only, they do not take cards)
Prima Caju: Restaurant inside of Hotel Caju that serves fresh organic breakfast and lunch.
Taberna Madeira
Need to know
For lodging, we stayed at Hotel Caju which was right in the heart of the capital, Funchal. Hotel Caju is a small boutique hotel with an amazing restaurant that serves healthy organic breakfast and lunch. I recommend getting a rental car to explore the island, especially if you have a limited amount of time. We were able to park in the garage of the sister hotel (The Vine) for a small fee.
