Advisor - A Food Lover’s Guide to Lima
Curator’s statement

Lima is one of the most exciting culinary destinations in the world, where centuries of cultural influences come together to create a food scene that feels endlessly creative. Beyond the incredible restaurants, the city’s stunning cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and vibrant neighborhoods give it an energy that’s both inspiring and unforgettable. I especially love spending sunset time in Miraflores, watching the light fall over the water, then wandering through Barranco, where colorful street art, music, and local life bring the city to life. Lima perfectly blends old and modern, making it a destination that constantly surprises me!

Things to do in Lima, Peru

  • Walk the Malecón in Miraflores: If Lima had a front porch, this would be it. The Malecón runs along stunning cliffs above the Pacific, and sunset walks past Parque del Amor with the ocean glowing below are about as romantic as Lima gets.

  • Explore Barranco: Barranco is Lima’s artsy, slightly rebellious little sister; the kind of neighborhood where you go for a casual stroll and somehow end up at a cocktail bar at midnight. Wander past colorful houses and murals and cross the iconic Puente de los Suspiros while soaking up the city’s creative energy.

  • Visit the Larco Museum: If you want to understand Peru beyond the plate, spend an afternoon at the beautiful Larco Museum. The museum’s collection spans thousands of years of history and somehow makes ancient civilizations feel surprisingly alive.

  • Visit Huaca Pucllana: Right in the middle of Miraflores sits Huaca Pucllana, a massive pyramid that predates the Incas by centuries! It’s one of those surreal Lima moments where ancient history and modern city life collide, literally.

  • Paraglide over the coast: If you’re feeling adventurous, you can paraglide right off the Miraflores cliffs and float above the Pacific. It’s easily one of the coolest ways to see Lima…equal parts thrill and postcard-worthy view.

  • Sunset drinks at Larcomar: Perched right on the cliffs, Larcomar is where locals and travelers gather for sunset drinks overlooking the ocean. Order a cocktail, watch the sky turn pink over the Pacific, and lean into the moment.

  • Explore a local market: To really understand Peruvian cuisine, head to a traditional market like Mercado de Surquillo. The stalls are packed with exotic fruits, fresh seafood, and ingredients that make you realize just how diverse Peru’s food culture really is.

  • Visit the Pedro de Osma Museum: Hidden in a stunning Barranco mansion, the Museo Pedro de Osma is basically a time machine for anyone who loves colonial art. Between wandering through opulent rooms and strolling the serene gardens, you’ll feel cultured without even trying and maybe a little like a Peruvian aristocrat for an hour.

Places to eat & drink in Lima, Peru

  • Verbena: Verbena feels like the kind of place where every dish tells a story and you’re invited to the table. Seasonal menus mean you never know exactly what you’ll get, but you can bet it will be inventive, beautifully plated, and impossible to forget.

  • Contraste: At Contraste, dinner is a journey across Peru on a single plate. Locally sourced ingredients meet bold techniques, and each tasting menu course is a little surprise: fun, flavorful, and totally Instagram-worthy (without even trying).

  • Lady Bee: Lady Bee is the kind of cocktail bar you wander into thinking it’s just drinks and walk out realizing you’ve had one of the most creative mixology experiences in Lima. Even a classic pisco sour comes with flair, a local twist, and maybe a wink from the bartender.

  • Sastrería Martínez: Tucked behind a tailor shop, Sastrería Martínez is a world-class speakeasy that feels like a secret only locals know. Ranked among the best bars in the world, the cocktails are precise, theatrical, and endlessly creative, perfect for anyone who loves drama in a glass!

  • La Mar: La Mar is the cevichería that started a thousand Instagram stories, and for good reason. Fresh fish, zesty citrus, and a lively atmosphere make it the perfect spot for a long lunch, a casual catch-up, or a midday seafood obsession; and don’t forget a pisco sour!

  • La Perlita: If you want casual, cozy, and authentically Peruvian, La Perlita delivers. This little spot feels like a local secret, serving some of the best traditional seafood in Lima, and it’s exactly the kind of place you’ll brag about discovering.

  • Cordial: Cordial is a natural wine lover’s dream with a soundtrack of spinning vinyls and a menu of small plates meant for sharing. It’s the kind of place where you linger over a glass, soak in the music, and feel like you’ve stumbled into a local’s favorite secret spot.

  • Rafael: Rafael is one of Lima’s most celebrated fine dining spots, and for good reason. Chef Rafael Osterling blends contemporary techniques with local ingredients in a way that’s refined but never stuffy; truly a meal that feels celebratory without trying too hard.

Need to know

  • Lima isn’t a city you just visit, it’s one you taste. Mornings along the coast can be foggy, so layers are a must if you plan to wander the cliffs or linger over an oceanfront coffee.

  • Traffic can be a little wild, so give yourself extra time going between neighborhoods.

  • Follow your instincts when it comes to food: the best bites often come from tiny cevicherías, bustling markets, or spots locals whisper about over wine.

  • Uber is your friend here: cheap, reliable, and way easier than hailing a taxi in the heat of Lima chaos.

  • Tipping is customary, around 10%-15% at restaurants.

  • Lima is warm and welcoming, but it’s still a big city so remember pickpockets exist, and they have a particular taste for distracted tourists. Keep an eye on your phones and anything luxurious, and treat your bag like it’s your baby!

  • The best way to feel like a local? Walk the neighborhoods. Sip a natural wine at a vinyl-spinning bar, linger over a perfectly tart ceviche, chase sunsets from cliffside parks, and let the city surprise you, sometimes in the form of a hidden mural or sometimes in the form of a street vendor handing you the best anticucho of your life!

  • At its heart, Lima is a culinary capital first, a city of culture second, and a playground for the curious always. Bring your appetite, your curiosity, and a willingness to leave a little room in your stomach… and maybe your suitcase… for the kind of experiences that stick with you.
