Rome and the Amalfi Coast are one of my favorite pairings in Italy—a little city energy followed by the slower rhythm of the coast. I love starting with beautiful design, incredible food, and a few days of exploring Rome. Then, head south for boat days, long seaside lunches, and nowhere you need to be in a hurry. Together, they make an effortlessly romantic trip that feels equal parts exciting and restorative.

Ease into Rome with a private golf cart tour
After a long travel day, a private golf cart tour is an effortless introduction to the city. See many of the city’s iconic areas without immediately logging miles on foot.
Go behind the scenes of Ancient Rome
If history is high on your list, skip the group tour and arrange an exclusive experience. Private, early-access, or after-hours options offer quieter and more meaningful ways to experience places like the Colosseum.
Take a food tour
There may be no better introduction to Italy than through food. Spend the morning shopping local markets, learning to make pasta, or tasting your way through one of Rome’s neighborhoods.
Make time for the baths at Six Senses
Even if you love a packed itinerary, leave room to slow down. The Roman Baths experience at Six Senses takes you through a modern bathing ritual, making it especially lovely after a flight.
Spend the day on the water along the coast
This would be at the top of the list for me. Charter a private boat for a day of swimming, hidden coves, and lunch along the sea. Capri is an easy destination, but sometimes the best party is simply enjoying the coastline from the water.
Wander & shop
Leather stores in Rome are a must. In Positano, wander the winding streets and small boutiques to shop for locally made clothing and pieces.
Take a cooking class on the coast
For a slower day, learn to prepare regional dishes using the ingredients the Amalfi Coast is known for—hands-on cooking, market shopping, even visiting a lemon farm.

The Court Rome
Come for the cocktails with the most unforgettable view in Rome—the Colosseum seemingly right in front of you. I love this as a pre-dinner stop; it’s very hard to get reservations.
Le Jardin de Russie
Tucked inside Hotel De Russie, this beautiful garden feels like a little escape from the energy of Rome.
La Sponda at Le Sirenuse
With live music and views of the coast, this bucket-list spot is very romantic.
Franco’s Bar
An iconic stop for a drink and the views. Staying at Le Sirenuse gets you to the front of the line.
Il Riccio Capri
If your boat day takes you to Capri, a stop at this beloved restaurant on the water is a must. Try their lobster pasta. Best meal I had in Italy.
Need to know
Timing matters. Rome and Amalfi are incredibly popular and expensive during peak summer. I traveled in early June and found a good middle ground. If your dates are flexible, late spring or early fall can be wonderful. Build in downtime or room to explore in each town. And while this guide leans more romantic, this pairing can also be great for a multigenerational girls’ trip. It’s easy to adapt from a honeymoon to a milestone celebration.
