Advisor - The Best of Salem: A 3-Day Itinerary
Curator’s statement

There’s something captivating about Salem’s atmosphere. It’s equal parts historic, mysterious, and charming. The city leans into its past in a way that feels immersive rather than overwhelming, creating a truly unique experience. Beyond the witch trail history, I found a warm, creative community and beautiful coastal scenery on my honeymoon. Salem stays with you long after you leave.

Where to stay

Day 1: Exploring Salem

I recommend starting day one just by exploring this charming and walkable town. If you stay at The Hawthorne Hotel, you are right in the middle of town and can walk everywhere!

I suggest starting with the Salem Witch Museum & Salem Witch Trials Memorial. Adjacent from the memorial is the Old Burying Point Cemetery. I highly recommend speaking to one of the staff members at the cemetery to learn some really cool history and facts about the location.

End your night with a History & Hauntings tour to get a real understanding of the deep-rooted history of Salem.

Day 2: Shopping & eating

Today is all about exploring shops and eating yummy food.

You’ll start by getting breakfast at the Ugly Mug Diner and strolling through some amazing shops, including HausWitch or Crow Haven Corner.

Between shopping spots, you can take a stroll to The House of Seven Gables, Ropes Mansion, and Salem Commons—all conveniently in town!

By the afternoon, I suggest taking a relaxing stroll to the Derby Wharf for amazing views and to see the “Friendship of Salem”.

Day 3: Day trip to Newport

This was taken inside The Marble House

Today we are making a 1.5-hour journey to Newport, Rhode Island to visit the Newport mansions. I believe this is a must-see anytime you are on the East Coast.

These beautiful Gilded Age mansions will take your breath away. You can download a self-guided audio tour to learn all the in-depth history and hidden gems in the rooms. Once you’ve toured all the mansions, walk the scenic cliff walk or the drive the 10-mile Ocean Drive to see more luxury estates.

End your evening with dinner at The Black Pearl before heading back to Salem for the night.

Need to know

  • Make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes. You will be walking a lot.

  • Bring layers and a waterproof coast as New England weather is unpredictable.

  • I also highly recommend walking everywhere possible. The town is very small and already crowded. Walking makes everything easier.

  • Some of my favorite shops I visited in Salem were Coven, Emporium 32, Modern Millie, Black Cat Curiosity Shoppe, and Village Silversmith.

  • The best coffee shops in town are Blackcraft Coffee (also a clothing store!), Odd Meter Coffee Co, and Front Street Coffeehouse.

  • Some amazing restaurants I highly suggest checking out are Amazing Pizza & More, Kokeshi, for amazing ramen, and Red’s Sandwich Shop.
