Things to do in San Juan
San Juan may seem small peck on the map, but it offers a wide array of activities and attractions to offer
Castillo San Felipe del Morro
Castillo San Felipe del Morro is an awe-inspiring sight, especially when approached from Old San Juan. The vast expanse of grassy lawn and stunning coastal views make it a popular spot for kite-flying. Its four levels of cannons, towering 140 feet above the sea, showcase an impressive feat of architecture and military prowess. The sound of waves crashing against the walls provides a mesmerizing experience of the ocean's power.
Discover Castillo San Cristobal
Castillo de San Cristobal features an observation post used during World War II, along with a network of tunnels, ramps, soldiers' quarters, and much more to explore.
Bioluminescent Bay kayak adventure
San Juan is home to 3 of the 7 bioluminescent bays in the world. These microscopic organisms create a mesmerizing "glow in the dark" effect known as bioluminescence. As you paddle through the water, the organisms light up in a neon blue-green, making it feel like you're gliding through a sea of glowing stars. For a quick adventure, head to Laguna Grande in San Juan. If you have more time and seek a more exclusive experience, visit Vieques Island, home to the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. The views are incredible, but an overnight stay on the island is necessary.
El Yunque Rainforest
A rainforest in North America? Yes, El Yunque is the only one, and it's absolutely breathtaking. Located just a 45-minute drive from San Juan. This stunning rainforest is best explored with a private tour to uncover hidden gems like rare plants, natural rivers, wildlife, waterfalls, cliffs, and many scenic spots.
Casa Bacardi: Bacardi rum tasting
Take a tour of the fascinating Bacardi distillery, where you can taste a variety of rums from the Bacardi family. Discover how rum is made and indulge in curated cocktails and high-end spirits.
San Juan beaches: Condado and Old San Juan
San Juan boasts some fantastic beaches, like those in the Condado area. If you're a beach lover, consider splitting your stay between two locations. Spend a few days at Condado Beach, a neighborhood known for its great beaches and abundant dining options. Then, move to Old San Juan for the latter part of your trip, where historic sites, bars, cafes, and restaurants are all within walking distance. Old San Juan is also home to the iconic "Umbrella Street" and its cobbled streets, reminiscent of Spanish towns.
Day trips
Vieques is a paradise for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts. This small island is home to the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay, offering a stunning stargazing experience. Playa Negra, with its unique black sand and turquoise waters, is a must-visit. As you explore the island, you’ll be delighted by the sight of wild horses roaming freely—they're everywhere you go.
