Advisor - Your Guide to Chiang Mai, Thailand: Celebrate the Magic of Yi Peng & Loy Krathong Lantern Festivals This November
Curator’s statement

Northern Thailand offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. As you arrive in Chiang Mai, you'll witness a fascinating transformation from the dense, untamed jungle to the historic, walled city. The city's moat and walls offer a glimpse into the challenges faced by monks who sought refuge in this remote region. Venture further north to Chiang Rai, the gateway to the Golden Triangle, where you'll encounter some of Thailand's most awe-inspiring temples and statues. This region's serene atmosphere provides a perfect contrast to the bustling cities of Bangkok and Phuket, making it an ideal starting or ending point for your Southeast Asian adventure.

Things to do in Chiang Mai, Thailand

If you're planning a trip to Thailand in November, there is a pretty good chance you've come across Yi Peng and Loy Krathong Lantern Festivals. But what is it? Loy Krathong is nationally celebrated to give thanks to the Goddess of Water. It occurs on the night of the full moon in the 12th month of the Thai Lunar calendar. The tradition consists of releasing lotus-shaped baskets with flowers and candles into rivers or waterways. Yi Peng is a traditional Northern Thailand celebration of the full moon in the second month of the Lanna Lunar calendar. This tradition consists of releasing Khom Loi, or a floating lantern into the air meant to bring good fortune. Chiang Mai is one of the only places in Thailand that celebrates both festivals and truly makes for an unforgettable experience! This year Yi Peng falls on November 15th & 16th, 2024 and Loy Krathong falls on November 16th, 2024!

If you plan on attending this event, I highly recommend the Premium or VIP ticket package. This includes: Ceremony Entrance fee, Lanna Thai Buffet Dinner & non-alcoholic beverages, Souvenir bag, two lanterns per person, one krathong per person. Watch the shows and participate in various activities, Pick-up & drop-off transportation to and from meeting point (MAYA Shopping Mall).

Pro Tip- You do not want to hope and pray you find a taxi back to Chiang Mai after this festival — it will be a massive headache! The Pick-Up / Drop-Off included with your Premium or VIP ticket is the difference-maker alone, but the extra perks make this an unforgettable experience!

Can't make it in November? No problem! Here is a list of other 'Things to Do' while in

Chiang Mai

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep — Located on top of Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai's most important and historical temples. One of the most rewarding views!

Wat Chedi Luang — Located in the center of town, these ancient ruins are home to one of the largest Lanna-inspired Chedi's.

Wat Phra Singh — Having undergone recent renovations, this temple is the most historically significant in all of Chiang Mai

Night Bazaar- Chiang Mai is home to one of the oldest and largest night bazaars in Thailand. Whether you're coming for the shopping or the eating, there is something for everybody at the night bazaar!

Elephant Sanctuaries- There are an abundance of Elephant Sanctuaries in Northern Thailand. There are rescue centers, ethical sanctuaries and sanctuaries with lodging! With so many choices available, I can help you navigate through the challenges of finding an ethical elephant sanctuary for your visit!

Day trip

If you have an extra day, then without a doubt you need to spend it in Chiang Rai. I recommend hiring a private car for this trip! The two places that are an absolute must for this day trip are Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple) and Wat Rong Khun (White Temple). Wat Rong Khun can be far busier of the two, and I suggest starting with that. Although they are exactly as they sound, no amount of words can describe the surreal appearance of each of these places until you get there!

Places to eat and drink in Chiang Mai, Thailand

  • Night Bazaar- I highly recommend having dinner while walking the bazaar one evening. Get lost in the crowd and bask in the aroma of traditional Northern Thai street food!

  • MAYA Shopping Center- Not sure what you're in the mood for? You'll find something at the MAYA Shopping Center no matter your budget!

  • Jarid Thai Food- Fantastic selection of Northern Thai cuisine and a great selection of fine wines!

  • Shakariki 432 x Tenyo Ramen- Osaka style and western style cuisine.

  • Nara Thai Cuisine- Renowned Boat noodles and fresh Northern Thai Cuisine!
