Things to do in Sonoma Valley

The unique Love Me (2016) sculpture by Richard Hudson on a hilltop at The Donum Estate.

Art & wine tour at Donum Estate

To me, nothing compares to the sensory experience at Donum Estate. This isn't just a vineyard; it’s a breathtaking, open-air gallery where world-class winemaking meets monumental contemporary art. As you wander through the lush vines, you suddenly stumble upon massive sculptures by legendary global artists rising from the landscape. It is a brilliant blend of nature, wine, and creativity that you have to see to believe. I have yet to experience anything like this.

The Francis Ford Coppola Winery & Pools

If your idea of uncorking Sonoma includes a bit of movie-director flair and resort-style relaxation, this is your spot. I love how the Francis Ford Coppola Winery seamlessly pairs an upscale tasting experience with a laid-back, sun-drenched ambiance. You can savor estate pours right from the comfort of a private cabana, dipping into the massive swimming pools between glasses. To me, this experience is the perfect blend of relaxation and indulgence.

Sterling Vineyards

Perhaps the most unique experience in the valley, you actually have to leave the ground to experience Sterling Vineyards. After hopping into a scenic aerial gondola that glides up the mountain, you get breathtaking, 360-degree views of the sprawling valley below. At the summit, the white, Mykonos-inspired architecture made me feel like I’d been transported to the Mediterranean. Pairing those legendary panoramas with their exceptional estate wines truly elevates the entire concept of a tasting journey.

Benziger Family Winery

Whenever friends ask for a unique winery recommendation—especially if they have kids in tow—this is always my top pick for the best family-friendly spot in the valley. I highly recommend taking their open-air tram tour, which is an absolute blast for all ages and a great way to see how wine is made from the ground up. Benziger is famous for its planet-friendly biodynamic farming, and I think it's fascinating to see it in action. You get a firsthand look at how their wild insect gardens, underground wine caves, and resident sheep grazing through the vineyards all work together as a living ecosystem to create incredible, eco-conscious wines.

Jack London State Historic Park

For a break from the wineries, this park is my absolute favorite escape. I love walking right into the rustic wooden cottage where the legendary author penned his greatest adventure stories. Beyond his writing, I think it's incredible how much London actually shaped the Sonoma Valley landscape; he was a pioneer of sustainable agriculture, using his "Beauty Ranch" to experiment with crop rotation, terracing, and organic farming long before they were mainstream. Just a short, peaceful hike through the redwood trees brings you to a stone museum filled with artifacts from his global travels and the ruins of his dream home. To me, it’s a beautifully preserved, poignant tribute to a life lived to the absolute fullest.

When I need a break from the wine glass, this park is my absolute favorite escape. I love walking right into the rustic wooden cottage where the legendary author penned his greatest adventure stories—you can almost feel the creative energy still in the room. Sonoma State Historic Park

This is where to go if you want to really understand the region's roots. You can step back in time on the historic plaza, and I always enjoy exploring California's northernmost Franciscan mission and the old military barracks. Just down the road, I love wandering the lush, shaded grounds of Lachryma Montis—General Vallejo's beautiful 1850s Victorian Gothic estate. The Swiss chalet, which now serves as a museum, always provides a much deeper understanding of how this valley came to be.

Places to eat & drink in Sonoma Valley

Our scratch-made Mexican lunch from El Molino Central in Sonoma.

Breakfast pick: Sunflower Caffé

I have to fuel up at Sunflower Caffé before a long day of wine tasting. Housed in a gorgeous landmark 1850s building right on the plaza, it serves up farm-fresh breakfast classics like thick-cut French toast and killer artisan espresso drinks. But the real secret here is the hidden backyard patio. I grab a table out there, surrounded by lush greenery, and soak in the morning sun with a signature eggs Benedict.

Elevated local cuisine at Wit & Wisdom

Wit & Wisdom provides my favorite dining experience in the area because it feels elevated but completely unpretentious. I love to grab a table near the wood-fired hearth oven, where you can watch the kitchen prep incredible regional comfort food that smells amazing the second you walk through the door. Pair that with their award-winning California wine list, and it’s the ultimate way to wind down after a day of exploring.

Sophisticated Mediterranean at El Dorado Kitchen

Located right on the historic Sonoma Plaza, this is my top recommendation for a sophisticated night out in their elegant indoor dining room. The menu highlights California-Mediterranean cuisine with the freshest local ingredients I’ve tasted in the valley. It’s the kind of place where you want to order a bottle from their stellar regional wine list and just linger for hours.

Country French at The Girl & the Fig

You can't talk about uncorking the best of Sonoma without mentioning this legendary institution. It has been serving up "country food with a French passion" for nearly three decades, and it still blows me away every time. The cozy dining room and charming garden patio are the perfect backdrop for indulging in seasonal, farm-to-table bistro classics. I highly recommend pairing your meal with something from their award-winning, Rhône-style wine list—it's an absolute must-visit.

Lebanese flavors at Spread Kitchen

When I want to switch things up from the usual wine country fare, this casual, counter-service spot is my go-to. Spread Kitchen brings a fantastic Lebanese-Californian flair to the valley, blending culinary heritage with fresh local produce. I love sitting on the festive patio and diving into their scratch-made mezze platters, freshly fried falafel, and slow-roasted lamb shawarma. It’s laid-back, vibrant, and packed with bold flavors.

Regional Mexican cuisine at El Molino Central

If you are looking for a casual meal, El Molino Central provides no-fuss dishes that completely deliver on flavor. They are famous for exceptional, scratch-made Mexican street food, and you can actually taste the quality because they grind organic heirloom corn daily on-site. I love their handmade tamales, crispy fish tacos, and rich mole poblano. The locals love it because it’s authentic and utterly delicious.

Sweet Scoops Homemade Ice Cream

Be sure to save a little extra room for dessert, because this charming, family-owned shop right on the historic plaza is where I go to satisfy my sweet tooth. Sweet Scoops crafts exceptional homemade ice cream fresh daily in small batches, and their rotating menu features creative, locally inspired flavors. If you can’t decide on just one—which happens to me every single time—you can grab one of their ice cream flights to sample a few.

Need to know

If you want to keep things easy and reduce the need for a car, I highly recommend staying right in town near the historic Sonoma Plaza. I love being able to just step out of my room and walk to the dozens of fantastic local restaurants and beautiful winery tasting rooms lined up along the plaza, making it effortless to sip and savor the best of the region.

When it comes to a full day of wine tasting, my biggest tip is to hire a driver so you can visit multiple vineyards and truly enjoy every single pour without any stress. On our tour, we were chauffeured around the valley in a beautifully restored, vintage VW van. Whether you join a group or book out a private van for your friends, your tour includes a picnic lunch and stops at some of the most scenic wineries across both Sonoma and Napa with the most knowledgeable drivers.

If you are a fellow book lover, you absolutely cannot miss Jack London State Historic Park, the sprawling "Beauty Ranch" once owned by the legendary author. It is just a scenic 20-minute drive north of the plaza in Glen Ellen, and it is one of my favorite places to connect literary history with natural beauty. My family loved spending a couple of hours exploring the miles of backcountry trails that wind past giant redwood groves, the haunting stone ruins of Wolf House, and the historic cottage where London actually wrote his famous works.
