Curator’s statement

Think of all the little things that make European cities so charming, and then combine them into one city. That’s Porto, and you’ll fall in love with it at first sight. Its tile-covered buildings are stacked on the banks of the Duoro River, where you can walk across the towering Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, the Port wine capital of the world. And in case you need another reason to visit, JK Rowling wrote the first chapters of Harry Potter in this city, inspired by its whimsical architecture and unique charm. It’s hard not to feel inspired here.

Things to do in Porto, Portugal

Get lost

Porto is definitely one of those cities you can just wander around for hours with no destination. Stroll down Rua dos Mercadores and take in all the tile-covered buildings, or along the Ribeira and stop for a waterfront drink. Because of all the hills, you’ll stumble upon several miradouros (lookouts) with stunning views of the city, like Miradouro da Rua das Aldas.

Cruise down the Duoro River

Whether it’s just a short ride through town or a day trip east to wine country, this is a must. There are several vendors on the waterfront that sell cheap boat rides, some of them including a port tasting across the river, too. If you’d like to indulge in a wine tasting tour of the famous Duoro River Valley, reserve an entire day for that.

Taste some port

Even if you’re not a fan of dessert wine, you must try it here! Plus, it’s a great excuse to stroll across the top of the Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia on the other side of the Duoro — the views are fantastic. A separate city from Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia is the capital of the port wine industry.

Places to eat & drink in Porto, Portugal

Brasão Coliseu is a comfortable place to eat Portuguese dishes.

Brasão Coliseu: A traditional Portuguese restaurant where you can try classic dishes like francesinha, an open-faced sandwich topped with various kinds of meat, a fried egg and gravy. You may want to share one with your travel buddy — it’s pretty rich!

Cervejaria Gazela: A tiny, legendary spot known for their cachorrinhos (imagine a hot dog, but better). Grab a seat at the counter and enjoy your cachorrinho with a pint of Super Bock for an afternoon snack.
