Things to do in South Florida

Sunny skies at spring training in West Palm Beach.

  • Baseball, baseball, baseball: Catching a spring training game is the heart of the season, offering an up-close look at MLB talent in relaxed, smaller ballparks. The atmosphere is festive and casual, making it just as enjoyable for devoted fans as it is for travelers simply soaking up the Florida sunshine.

  • Beaches: The beaches along South Florida’s coast are perfect for unwinding between games, with warm water, soft sand, and plenty of sunshine. Whether you prefer a lively stretch with restaurants nearby or a quieter shoreline for long walks, there’s a spot to match every mood. Let me know your vibe, and I’ll find the perfect beach for you!

  • Fishing trip: A guided fishing excursion offers the chance to experience Florida’s incredible coastal waters while targeting species like snapper, grouper, or even sailfish, depending on the season. It’s a memorable way to enjoy the outdoors, whether you’re an experienced angler or fishing for the first time. Several local restaurants will transform your fresh catch into a chef-prepared feast, turning your day on the water into a memorable, made-to-order dinner experience.

  • Stranahan House (Fort Lauderdale): This beautifully preserved 1901 home is the oldest surviving structure in Fort Lauderdale and offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s early pioneer days. A guided tour brings local history to life through the stories of the Stranahan family and the region’s transformation from trading post to vibrant destination.

  • Boat cruise (Fort Lauderdale): Often called the “Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale is best experienced from the water, where scenic cruises wind through canals lined with luxury yachts and impressive waterfront estates. It’s a relaxing way to take in the city’s glamorous coastal lifestyle.

  • Henry Morrison Flagler Museum (Palm Beach): Housed in the opulent Gilded Age mansion Whitehall, this museum showcases the life of railroad magnate Henry Flagler and the rise of Florida as a luxury destination. Visitors can explore grand rooms, historic rail cars, and beautifully landscaped grounds overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway.

  • Lighthouse (Jupiter): Climbing the historic red lighthouse rewards visitors with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, and surrounding coastline. The site also features a museum and walking paths.

  • El Vez (Fort Lauderdale): This vibrant waterfront restaurant serves modern Mexican cuisine with bold flavors, creative cocktails, and a lively atmosphere. It’s a fun spot for margaritas, fresh guacamole, and shareable plates with views of the water.

  • Tommy Bahama Restaurant (Jupiter): Blending island-inspired flavors with coastal elegance, this restaurant offers fresh seafood, tropical cocktails, and a relaxed yet polished setting. It’s perfect for happy hour after catching a spring training game.

  • The Boathouse at the Riverside (Fort Lauderdale): Set along the New River, this scenic restaurant pairs waterfront views with a menu featuring seafood, steaks, and classic American favorites. We love eating lunch here, watching the yachts and boats sail by, before spending the afternoon shopping on Las Olas Boulevard.

  • The Cooper (Palm Beach Gardens): Known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients and seasonal menu, The Cooper delivers an elevated farm-to-table dining experience in a stylish setting. It’s a great choice for brunch, lunch, or dinner with something for every palate.

  • SaltWater Brewery (Delray Beach): This local craft brewery is famous for its innovative beers and relaxed, welcoming taproom atmosphere. It’s an excellent stop to sample unique brews and enjoy the laid-back energy.

  • Funky Buddha Brewery (Fort Lauderdale): One of South Florida’s most well-known breweries, Funky Buddha offers creative, flavor-forward beers alongside a full food menu in a lively indoor-outdoor space. It’s a popular gathering spot with a fun, energetic vibe perfect for groups.

Need to know

There are three convenient airport options for your trip—Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami—giving you flexibility depending on flight prices and your itinerary. Keep in mind that Fridays and Saturdays tend to be the busiest travel days due to heavy cruise ship traffic, so flying midweek when possible can mean better fares and a smoother airport experience.

While it’s convenient to attend games at your team’s home ballpark, it’s worth researching the other spring training stadiums within driving distance and planning to visit a few different ones. Each venue has its own personality and fan experience, and exploring multiple parks can turn your trip into a broader Grapefruit League adventure rather than just a series of games in one location.
