Curator’s statement
SoCal has been a repeat trip for our family for many years. I love it for its endless sunshine, relaxed vibe, and the incredible variety of beach towns that make every day feel like a getaway. From the surf culture of Huntington Beach to the scenic cliffs of Laguna, the artistic energy of Venice, and the coastal elegance of Newport Beach, each spot has its own unique charm that keeps me coming back for more.

Things to do in Southern California

The Wedge: A surfing hotspot near Newport Beach, The Wedge gets its name from the way the waves break. It’s located at the mouth of Newport Harbor, and draws visitors for the amazing people-watching, photo ops, and iconic California vibes!
Crystal Cove State Park is a beautiful beach spot located between Newport and Laguna Beach. It is stunningly beautiful and less crowded than some other local spots.
Balboa Pier: Fun amusement boardwalk with a bit of nostalgia.
Catalina Island: Take a short ferry ride and explore a remote island right off the coast that’s a perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty.
Laguna Beach: Stroll through the artsy streets or admire the cliff-side homes. Laguna has several popular beach spots such as Crescent Bay Beach (a local fav), the main beach with a playground, or my personal favorite, Thousand Steps Beach! Ask me about my stories here!
Huntington Beach: A relaxed beach town known as surf city. This is a great place to catch a game of beach volleyball, watch surfers off the pier, or rent bikes and ride along the beach. It also has great dining and shopping.
Sports fan? Catch a game at nearby SoFi Stadium, Angel Stadium, or Dodger Stadium.
Disneyland, Universal Studios, & California Adventure Parks: Just a short drive away—escape the beach towns for a fun day of thrills.
Places to eat & drink in Southern California

Crystal Cove Shake Shack: The best burgers and milkshakes with killer views! It often has a line, but for a good reason!
The Beachcomber: This is a famous restaurant that sits on Crystal Cove Beach. You can set a blanket out and put your name in for brunch, lunch, or dinner and enjoy your beach time before dining. The beignets are my personal favorite.
Las Brisas: coastal Mexican food built into a cliff in Laguna Beach. Stunning views and great Mexican food.
Gelato Paridoso: You can’t go to Laguna Beach and not stop here! You will thank me later!
The Rose Bakery Cafe: Located in downtown Newport Beach, this cafe is a staple for daily breakfast and lunch options. My kids love the donuts and smoothies, and because the iced coffees and breakfast sandwiches are the bomb, it’s a win for all!
Skyloft: In the mood for a cocktail and rooftop atmosphere? This place has a contemporary vibe with views of the Laguna coastline.
Malibu Farms: A hidden gem located on a pier in Malibu.
Need to know
Nearby airports: LAX and John Wayne (SNA). I have used both but prefer SNA because it’s closer to the beach towns and less chaotic.
Best times to travel here: summer and fall.
I try to avoid “the June Gloom”. The days tend to be overcast in early June. Weather in the winter is a little chilly for swimming, but great for enjoying outdoor activities and shopping.
Looking for a day trip while visiting? Take a short two-hour drive to San Diego and visit Coronado.
