Advisor - Northern Greece: City & Sea
Curator’s statement

Northern Greece is where history, coastline, and culture quietly converge. Ancient sites and centuries-old streets sit alongside a vibrant, modern rhythm, where coffee is taken slowly and meals are meant to be lingered over. With exceptional food, easy access to the sea, and a pace that feels both grounded and effortless, it offers a more understated and deeply local experience of Greece. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, look a little closer, and live well.

Things to do in Northern Greece

Ladadika District (Thessaloniki)

A lively, historic quarter filled with restaurants and bars—perfect for an evening that turns into a late night. Think warm lights, music spilling into the streets, and an effortlessly social atmosphere.

Aristotelous Square (Thessaloniki)

The heart of the city, opening out to the sea. Come for a stroll, a bit of shopping, and the iconic waterfront views—especially beautiful at golden hour.

Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina)

A short trip from Thessaloniki, this is the burial site of Philip II of Macedon. The museum is built around the tombs themselves—quiet, atmospheric, and incredibly powerful.

Ancient Philippi (near Kavala)

A UNESCO-listed archaeological site where history unfolds at every step. Walk through ancient ruins, a Roman forum, and an amphitheatre still standing against the landscape.

Kavala Old Town (Panagia District)

Winding streets, colorful houses, and sweeping views over the sea. It’s the kind of place best explored slowly, with no real destination in mind.

Waterfront walk (Thessaloniki)

Pick up an ice cream and wander along the promenade as the city shifts into evening. A simple ritual, but one that captures the rhythm of life here.

Olive Era (Thessaloniki)

A beautifully curated shop for elevated Greek goods. Perfect for thoughtful souvenirs that feel both local and refined.

The White Tower & Seafront (Thessaloniki)

One of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Walk the surrounding promenade, take in the views, and pause for a moment to watch the city move around you.

Places to eat & drink in Northern Greece

Ergon Agora (Thessaloniki)

A beautifully curated market and restaurant in one. Elevated Greek dishes, exceptional ingredients, and a space that invites you to linger.

Estet Café (Thessaloniki)

Incredible coffee and fresh sandwiches—perfect for a relaxed but refined lunch.

The Modernist Café (Thessaloniki)

Chic, minimal, and ideal for a slower coffee moment in a beautifully designed setting.

Comfy Coffee (Kavala)

A local favorite with excellent coffee and an easy, welcoming feel.

Grilled Flavours (Kavala)

For a truly authentic gyro, done exceptionally well. Take it to go and enjoy it by the water.

Cityzen (Kavala)

Come for a spritz, stay for the sunset. A perfect end to the day overlooking the sea.

Local patisseries (Thessaloniki)

Stop into a neighborhood bakery for bougatsa or something sweet. These are the kinds of places you find by wandering—and they’re often the most memorable.

Seafront dining in Kavala

Choose a simple restaurant along the harbor and order fresh seafood. It doesn’t need to be complicated to be perfect.

Need to know

  • Start with coffee, always. Greek coffee culture is a ritual—lean into it and let your mornings unfold slowly (but know there is excellent takeout coffee as well).

  • Plan lightly. The best spots are often the ones you stumble upon between destinations.

  • Prioritize long meals. Lunch is not rushed here—order a few things, share, and stay awhile.

  • Balance city and sea. I recommend Thessaloniki first to get your cultural fix, then spend a few days in Kavala for slower coastal moments.

  • Shop thoughtfully. Skip the obvious souvenirs and opt for curated local goods you’ll actually use.

  • Golden hour is everything. Plan your evenings around it—whether it’s a walk, a drink, or dinner by the water.
