Advisor - Weekend Getaway to Newport, Rhode Island
Curator’s statement

Newport, Rhode Island, hits every note for me. It blends coastal elegance with laid-back New England charm—incredible seafood, ocean views at every turn, and those iconic mansions that make you feel like you’ve stepped into another era. I love that you can spend the morning touring historic estates, the afternoon shopping along Thames Street, and the evening by the water with a lobster roll in hand. Add in the pet-friendly vibe and all the beautiful flowers spilling out of window boxes and gardens, and it’s simply one of those places that feels both refined and welcoming at the same time.

Things to do in Newport, Rhode Island

When the “summer cottage” is bigger than your entire neighborhood! Newport mansions never get old—just more jaw-dropping every time.

  • Tour the historic mansions
The mansions are simply spectacular. Walking through The Breakers or Marble House feels like stepping into another era of opulence and history.

  • Walk the Cliff Walk
This is one of my favorite experiences—ocean views on one side, dramatic mansions on the other. It’s scenic, refreshing, and absolutely iconic.

  • Eat fresh seafood by the water
Newport does seafood right. Lobster rolls, oysters, and fresh catch taste even better with harbor views and salty air.

  • Shop along Thames Street
I love the mix of coastal boutiques, specialty shops, and nautical charm. It’s perfect for finding something unique you won’t see at home.

  • Stroll Bowen’s Wharf & Bannister’s Wharf
The marina views, sailboats, and classic New England architecture make this area so picturesque. It’s especially beautiful in the late afternoon light.

  • Walk the beach
Whether it’s Easton’s Beach or a quieter stretch nearby, there’s something grounding about walking along the water here—even on a breezy day.

  • Stop for a harbor cruise
Seeing Newport from the water gives you a whole new perspective. The sailboats, coastline, and ocean breeze make it memorable.

  • Enjoy the flower-filled streets
The window boxes, gardens, and seasonal blooms add so much charm. It’s one of those places where even a simple walk feels beautiful.

  • Bring your pup along
Newport is surprisingly pet-friendly. From outdoor dining to scenic walks, it’s easy to enjoy the destination with your four-legged companion.

Places to eat & drink in Newport, Rhode Island

Harbor views and something refreshing in hand… Newport understood the assignment. Sunlight, sailboats, and a cocktail that tastes like vacation. Cheers to coastal living done right.

  • The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar
Right on the water with classic harbor views. Their seafood is consistently excellent, and it’s one of my go-to spots for a relaxed but polished dinner.

  • Clarke Cooke House
An iconic Newport experience. It’s lively, historic, and perfect for a fun evening out—especially if you head downstairs after dinner.

  • The Black Pearl
A Bowen’s Wharf staple. The clam chowder and waterfront patio seating make it a must-stop for that classic New England feel.

  • Castle Hill Inn (The Lawn or Dining Room)
If you want something truly special, this is it. Sunset on the lawn with a cocktail in hand feels like peak Newport elegance.

  • Midtown Oyster Bar
Fresh oysters, creative seafood dishes, and a great energy. It’s approachable but elevated—perfect for lunch or dinner.

  • Bar ‘Cino
A cozy, stylish spot for Italian-inspired small plates and pizza. Great for a casual but chic evening.

  • Brick Alley Pub
Fun, energetic, and perfect when you want something laid-back. The menu is broad, and it’s great for groups.

  • Flo’s Clam Shack (Portsmouth, just outside Newport)
A little more casual and absolutely worth it. Fried clams and ocean views—simple and delicious.

  • The White Horse Tavern
One of the oldest taverns in America. It’s historic, charming, and a great place for a cozy New England meal.

  • Cru Café
A great brunch or lunch stop tucked near the harbor. It’s relaxed, reliable, and perfect before a day of shopping or mansion touring.

Need to know

  • It’s walkable—but hilly
Downtown Newport is very walkable, but expect some hills and uneven sidewalks. Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you’re doing the Cliff Walk.

  • Make reservations in season
Summer and early fall are peak times, and restaurants book quickly. If you have your heart set on a waterfront dinner, plan ahead.

  • Parking can be tight
Especially in high season. If your hotel offers parking, that’s a huge bonus—otherwise allow extra time.

  • The Cliff Walk isn’t all smooth path
Parts are paved and easy, but other sections are rocky and uneven. Check which access points work best for your comfort level.

  • Dress in layers
Even in summer, evenings by the water can get breezy. Newport weather can shift quickly.

  • Shoulder season is a hidden gem
Late spring and early fall are beautiful—fewer crowds, great restaurant access, and the flowers are still stunning.

  • It’s pet-friendly (with some limits)
Many outdoor dining spots welcome dogs, but the mansions do not. Plan accordingly if you’re traveling with your pup.

  • Plan around events
Newport hosts sailing events, festivals, and weddings regularly. It adds to the charm—but also to the traffic.
