Day 1: Welcome to Milan & dinner in Brera

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: Visit Camparino in the galleria for classic Milanese aperitivo

Arrival & settling in

Upon arrival via train at Milano Centrale, make a quick stop at Mercato Centrale Milano—a stylish indoor market perfect for an easy first bite (fresh panini or pizza are great options). It’s an efficient and delicious way to refuel before heading to your hotel.

Take a taxi or Uber to your hotel, check in, and take time to relax. When ready, head out for your first look at the Duomo di Milano, just a short walk away.

If you’re able to secure late afternoon tickets to the Duomo terraces, take the lift for sweeping views over the city in the afternoon light—an unforgettable first experience. If not, simply enjoy the square and Duomo in the beautiful evening light and continue on.

Step inside the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and pause for a classic Milanese aperitivo. Options include Camparino in Galleria, for a traditional experience, or La Rinascente Rooftop, which is actually a full food court on the seventh floor that includes multiple bar and restaurant options like Il Bar for a relaxed drink with view before continuing your evening.

(Note: If you are tired from the day’s travel, you can opt to end the night here, extending aperitivo into dinner at one of the La Rinascente restaurants like Maio Restaurant for a more polished meal, or Obicà Mozzarella Bar for relaxed Italian favorites. Alternately, you could head over to Piz for one of Milan's top pizzas in a casual setting.)

Evening: Dinner in Brera

From here, take a pleasant 10- to 15-minute walk to the Brera district, passing Teatro alla Scala along the way. As you enter Brera, the atmosphere shifts to charming streets lined with boutiques and cafés—perfect for an evening stroll.

End your night with dinner at one of the following depending on the mood:

  • Gloria Osteria Milano: Trendy, lively, and stylish restaurant known for its fun ambiance and elevated Italian cuisine.

  • Ristorante La Libera: Classic trattoria known for its warm atmosphere and traditional Milanese dishes—comfortable, unpretentious, and genuinely local.

  • Osteria da Fortunata: Lively spot known for its fresh, handmade pasta prepared in-house, offering a fun, casual atmosphere with classic Roman flavors.

  • Trattoria Il Cestino: Classic Trattoria offering a wide menu of Italian favorites—from pasta to seafood—in a lively yet comfortable setting.

This seamless progression—from grand landmarks to aperitivo to one of Milan’s most charming neighborhoods—creates a perfectly balanced and memorable first night in the city.

Day 2: Last Supper & Duomo

"The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci is located in the refectory of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie

Morning / afternoon

After breakfast, return to the Duomo for a 1.5-hour guided tour of the cathedral and archeological site and/or museum. Include a visit to the terraces if you did not visit on day one. I can work with you to secure the best tickets and tours to match your travel style.

After your tour of the Duomo, head to nearby Cesarino. A small, casual sandwich shop just steps from the Duomo, Cesarino is perfect for a quick, satisfying bite between sightseeing stops. Known for fresh, made-to-order Italian panini using high-quality meats and cheeses, it’s an ideal option for a simple, flavorful lunch or snack without the need for a full sit-down meal. An alternate panini stop closer to "The Last Supper" (your next stop) is Ai Tre Morsi. Expect a line at both places, but they move quickly and are worth the reward.

After enjoying your panini and break, either taxi or make your way on foot to the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, home to Leonardo da Vinci’s "The Last Supper." This is one of the most visited and most restricted sites in Italy. Tickets sell out months in advance and viewing times are strictly limited to 15 minutes per group. I can work with you to secure these hard-to-get tickets in advance.

Nighttime: Dinner at Giacomo Arengario or night at the opera

If the opera interests you, procure tickets in advance to attend an opera tonight in box seats at La Scala, the top opera house in the world. Pair this with early dinner at Ristorante Galleria and end the night with a cocktail at the rooftop bar at your hotel.

Alternatively, secure a reservation with Duomo view to end your Milan visit at Giacomo Arengario, perched above Piazza del Duomo with floor-to-ceiling windows and views that will make you fall in love with this city all over again. The menu is classic Italian done with elegance.

A note from Jennifer

Depending on your pre-arranged timed tickets and tours, either start with the Duomo or do this day in reverse, starting with "The Last Supper."

Day 3: Goodbye to Milan

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before taking a taxi or Uber back to the Central train station to continue your journey in Northern Italy or Switzerland.
