Curator’s statement
In this Phuket travel guide, you’ll have everything you need for an unforgettable trip to Thailand’s largest island. You’ll hit the gleaming Big Buddha, secret coves like Ao Yon and Laem Sing, golden sunsets on Surin Beach (right at your base), and the freshest Southern Thai eats that locals love. Fun fact: Phuket means “mountain jewel” in Thai (from the Tamil words for crystal mountain), and about 70% of the island is actually covered in lush hills and jungle—way more mountains than most people expect! Phuket isn’t just party beaches and buckets. It’s colourful Sino-Portuguese streets, hidden turquoise bays, a white-rum distillery in sugarcane fields, and real jungle hikes. This 10-day plan (based at Surin Beach) mixes icons with proper hidden gems so you feel the authentic side of the island.

Day 1: Easy arrival & Bang Tao sunset at Catch Beach Club

Perfect way to relax after a long flight
Arrive early afternoon, settle in at Surin Beach, and unwind. Quick ride north to Bang Tao Beach at Catch Beach Club, one of Phuket’s top sunset spots. Grab a glorious cocktail, enjoy the ocean views, and vibe to chilled music as the sun sets.
How to get there: Grab/taxi north (~10–15 min, 5–7 km) or scooter (easy coastal road).
Dinner on the way back: Riverside Restaurant—your go-to authentic, cheap local Thai spot (family-run, fresh seafood, massaman curry, grilled prawns, pad Thai). Quick 6-minute walk from Surin Beach.
Day 2: Big Buddha & Kata Noi Beach

The 45-metre iconic Big Buddha
Early start at the 45m marble Big Buddha for epic Andaman panoramas over Kata/Karon. Peaceful temple grounds, modest dress.
How to get there: Grab/taxi south (~30–40 min) or scooter (winding but scenic roads). Arrive pre-9 am. Free entry.
Afternoon: Drop down to Kata Noi Beach (or Kata/Karon) for a relaxed swim, soft-sand stroll, and beachside lunch (fresh grilled seafood, papaya salad—simple and local).
How to get there (beach): Quick Grab/scooter south (10–15 min from Big Buddha). Then back to Surin (30–40 min north).
Day 3: James Bond Island adventure in Phang Nga Bay

James Bond Island
Full-day boat tour to iconic James Bond Island (Khao Tapu rock from the Man with the Golden Gun). Cruise dramatic limestone karsts, explore sea caves by kayak/canoe, swim in emerald lagoons, visit Koh Panyee floating village for lunch and local vibes.
How to get there: Book a tour with hotel pickup from Surin Beach (~7–9 am start, 1–1.5 hr transfer to pier and boat ride). Speedboat recommended for speed and extra stops. Tips: Early departure beats crowds; bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes, cash for park fee (~300 THB). Return to Surin ~5–7 pm—perfect for a relaxed evening.
Day 4: Hidden Laem Sing Beach

Laem Sing Beach
Secret gem: Laem Sing (boat from Surin end or short cliff walk—turquoise perfection, almost no development). Grab lunch at one of the authentic cheap Thai spots on the cliffs (simple grilled seafood, papaya salad, fresh catches—super local and wallet-friendly).
How to get there: Walk/Grab short hop to Surin for Laem Sing boat (100–200 THB return) or 20-min walk.
Dinner: Suay (Choeng Thale) (Michelin Plate)—contemporary Thai with modern twists and artsy presentation by owner-chef Tammasak. Signature grilled lemongrass lamb chops and bold flavours in a bright, airy space—sassy, unique, authentic, yummy. Convenient in Choeng Thale area (~10–20 min back toward Surin).
Day 5: Chalong Bay Rum Distillery

Meesapam Khun Yai Chian Restaurant
Tour the famous white-rum spot: mojito welcome, sugarcane-to-bottle process, taste nine spirits. Fun, scenic fields.
How to get there: Grab/taxi south (~30–40 min, ~20–25 km) or scooter. Book tours (1/3/5/7 pm) online.
Dinner on the way back: Meesapam Khun Yai Chian (Michelin-recognised)—historic Hokkien spot opened in 1952 by Grandma Chian (recipes still honoured by family). Signature Mee Sapam stir-fried noodles with seafood, plus stir-fried oysters with crispy egg roll, beansprouts, kale, and chilli sauce—authentic Phuket Thai-Chinese favourites, eat like a local. Convenient stop en route north to Surin (~15–25 min from distillery area).
Day 6: Escape to Ao Yon Beach

Ao Yon Beach
Ultimate hidden gem: Ao Yon Beach, a quiet, shallow turquoise, zero vendors, total calm. Swim, snorkel rocks, or just unwind.
How to get there: Grab/taxi southeast (~45–60 min, ~30–35 km) or scooter (allow extra time for traffic). Signposted coastal road.
Day 7: Jungle hike–Khao Phra Thaeo

Jungle hike – Khao Phra Thaeo
Real hike in Phuket’s last rainforest: Bang Pae Waterfall trail (2–4 hrs, lush jungle to big falls). A 4 km-jungle trail links the waterfalls, but the thick rainforest and winding paths can be tricky to navigate. It’s a good idea to hire a local guide at the visitor center to keep you on the right track. A guide will cost around 300–400THB depending on the group size.
How to get there: Grab/taxi north (~30–45 min, ~20–25 km) or scooter. Small entrance fee at Bang Pae side. Morning best, bring water/bug spray.
Day 8: Quiet northern Bang Tao & Surin sunset

Bangtao Beach
Chill on peaceful northern Bang Tao. It’s a lovely 6 km-long sandy beach, the south part is fairly busy but once you reach half way it’s peaceful and quiet. Then back to Surin Beach (your base beach!) for another stunning sunset.
Day 9: Old Phuket Town exploration & food dive

Soi Romanee in Phuket Town
Head to colourful Old Town for Sino-Portuguese shophouses, Thalang Road strolls, markets, and golden-hour vibes. Lunch at One Chun (Michelin Bib Gourmand), a vintage shophouse, killer Southern Thai family recipes.
How to get there: Grab/taxi south (~30–40 min) or scooter. Walkable once there.
Day 10: Quick morning to hidden Banana Beach & fly out

Banana Beach
Quick ride north to Banana Beach: A true hidden gem (small secluded cove with soft sand, clear water, jungle surroundings, almost no crowds). Short steep path down from the road (park near small sign/Trisara area), swim/snorkel, or just soak in the peace for a relaxed last morning.
How to get there: Grab/taxi or scooter north (~10–15 min, 5–8 km from Surin). Then easy Grab/taxi to airport (~30–40 min north). Allow buffer for flight check-in.
Need to know
When to visit: November to April (dry season—sunny, calm seas, ideal beaches). December–February peaks with crowds and prices; November or March–April = sweet spot.
How to get there: Fly into Phuket International Airport (HKT). Grab/taxi to Surin Beach: realistically 30–40 min (~20–25 km, traffic depending).
How to get around: Grab/taxi apps (easy, no haggling, 200–600 THB per ride depending on distance).
Scooter rental (250–300 THB/day, international licence required). Important scooter note: Always drive carefully. Phuket roads can be chaotic. Police frequently stop for checks on helmets and licences. No licence or helmet, fine up to 2000 THB ($64 USD). Better safe than sorry!
Languages spoken: Thai and strong English in tourist spots.
Top five places to visit: Big Buddha, Old Phuket Town, Surin sunset (your backyard), Laem Sing Beach, Chalong Bay Rum Distillery.
Ideal trip length: 10–12 days (time to relax, not rush).
