Things to do in Vail

Donovan Pavilion & Piney Lake: We love starting the day with a drive past Donovan Pavilion and out to Piney Lake. The short hike to the falls from the north trailhead on Red Sandstone Road is easy and super rewarding. We’ve even spotted moose and otters here while renting a canoe—which was a huge hit with the kids! After the hike, lunch by the lake feels like the perfect reward.
Betty Ford Alpine Gardens: This spot always feels like a hidden gem. The alpine flowers are stunning, and it’s such a peaceful place to wander with kids. Bring a snack or a book and spend some quiet time in the shade—it’s a great reset in the middle of a busy day.
Nature Centers: The Nature Center in East Vail is a fun stop with little ones, and Walking Mountain Nature Center in Avon is one of our favorites. It has kid-friendly trails and a cool wooden teepee that’s perfect for exploring. Over in Beaver Creek, the Five Senses Trail by the chapel is a must—our kids loved all the interactive elements.
Avon Nottingham Lake: This is our go-to on a warm afternoon. The lake has a shallow, calm swimming area that’s great for kids (even if the water’s a bit chilly!). We’ve spent hours here playing in the sand, paddleboarding, and enjoying simple summer fun.
Vail Stables Goat Happy Hour: Goat Happy Hour is a family favorite! The views are stunning, and while the adults sip a drink and unwind, the kids have a blast petting goats and watching the horses. It’s relaxed, quirky, and such a unique way to experience the mountains.
Places to eat & drink in Vail

Vail Brewing Co: We love popping into Vail Brewing Co after a day outside—it’s super laid-back and family-friendly. The adults enjoy sampling the local craft beers (so many good ones!), and there’s usually room for the kids to hang out too. Great for a relaxed afternoon or low-key evening.
The Red Lion: The Red Lion is one of those classic Vail places you just have to experience. We’ve gone for the live music, stayed for the burgers and nachos. It’s a lively spot that works just as well after a hike as it does in ski season.
Vendetta’s: Vendetta’s hits the spot when everyone’s hungry and you just want something easy and delicious. Their pizza is always a win with the kids, and the pasta is great too. It’s cozy and casual—ideal after a long day of exploring.
Northside Kitchen: We plan our mornings around breakfast at Northside. The breakfast burrito is great. It’s quick, hearty, and the perfect fuel before heading into the mountains.
Garfinkel’s: We love Garfinkels’ for the patio alone—sunny, casual, and great people-watching. The food is classic bar fare with a local twist (think wings, burgers, and wraps), and it’s the kind of place you can relax without a fuss. The vibe is always welcoming.
Mountain Standard: When we want something a bit more special but still relaxed, Mountain Standard is our go-to. The wood-fired dishes are so flavorful, and they do a great job sourcing local ingredients. It’s the kind of place where everything on the menu is a solid choice.
Need to know
Don’t miss: Piney Lake hike, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, and the Vail Farmers’ Market.
Eat at: Mountain Standard for wood-fired eats, and stop by Vail Brewing Co. for a family-friendly patio.
Getting around: Use Vail’s free bus system for easy access to trails and town.
Fun extra: Try goat yoga or visit during one of Vail’s summer festivals for added entertainment.
