Advisor - Escape to the Lake District, England
Curator’s statement

As an English literature major in college, I was drawn to Wordsworth’s poetry and its emphasis on nature as a force for spirituality and peace. When I found out that Wordsworth was primarily inspired by his home in the Lake District, England, I immediately put it on my list of places to visit. While visiting my family in London, it was not a difficult side trip to take the train to Manchester, rent a car, and drive up to Windermere. Most people leave London and head to the Cotswolds. I urge you to venture further and head to the Lake District—serene lakes, farm-to-table food, breathtaking hikes, and some quiet moments in nature that will soothe your soul.

Things to do in England

Summit of Helvellyn

  • Helvellyn Hike: The most stunning hike on a sunny day. Physically rewarding and emotionally powerful, with a summit that reveals sweeping views of lakes and ridgelines in every direction. It’s the kind of climb that makes the landscape feel earned. Roundtrip it’s 4.6 miles, so expect it to take a few hours.

  • Hadrian’s Wall: This might not seem like something cool, but walking along Hadrian’s Wall is an awesome hands-on way to experience history. Hard to believe that this Roman frontier that has stood for nearly two thousand years. The surrounding countryside is stunning and don’t miss a pint at the Twice Brewed Inn after your hike!

  • Grasmere & Wordsworth’s home: Of course you need to visit the home of Wordsworth! It feels less like touring a site and more like stepping into the landscape that shaped some of England’s most important writing. See the world through the poet’s eyes.

  • Lake Windermere boat ride: A boat ride on Windermere is entirely shaped by weather and light—sometimes dramatic and windswept, sometimes soft and mirror-like. Checking out the homes tucked into the coastline of the lake is worth the ride!

  • Lake District sheepdog experience: Watching sheepdogs work alongside their handlers is one of the most authentic ways to understand life in the Lake District. It’s not a show—you get to learn all about the authentic living tradition of skill, trust, and land stewardship that has shaped the region for generations. Highly recommend!

Places to eat & drink in England

Fresh fish and lamb shank at the Wild Boar

  • Crafty Baa: Our favorite spot in Windemere. The fireplace, warm lighting, and layered décor make it feel instantly welcoming, especially after a cold or rainy day exploring.

  • Hole in T’Wall: Hole in T’Wall is tiny in the best possible way—intimate, lively, and full of personality. The staff are genuinely friendly, and the craft beer selection is impressive for such a small space, making it feel like a local secret you’re lucky to stumble into.

  • Wild Boar Restaurant: The Wild Boar is just down the road from the Gilpin, and it feels like classic countryside dining done right. The fireplace adds to the atmosphere, and the food stands out—especially the fish and the lamb shank, both beautifully executed.

  • Brown Sugar: Brown Sugar is the cutest all-day cafe. The food is fresh and lovely (think pastries, soups, and sandwiches), and the outdoor area is beautiful, making it an easy stop.

  • Vinegar Jones: Vinegar Jones delivers exactly what great takeaway chips should be—hot, perfectly cooked, and wrapped in paper. When the fish is slimy, it’s the best!

  • The Twice Brewed Inn: The Twice Brewed Inn is a fantastic stop, especially if you’re traveling with a dog. It’s welcoming, relaxed, and perfect for a hearty lunch—classic pies and toasties that feel exactly right after time spent walking the surrounding countryside.
