During my junior year at Washington State University (go Cougs!), I made one of the best decisions of my life — I spent an entire semester studying abroad in Florence, Italy. I had always heard about Italy’s breathtaking beauty, but experiencing it firsthand for five incredible months was something else entirely. From indulging in mouthwatering cuisine to exploring world-class museums and endless activities, Florence has a way of making you feel like a local in no time.

Things to do in Florence, Italy

Climb to the top of the duomo: The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Il Duomo) is Florence’s most iconic landmark. Climb 463 steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the city.
Admire Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery: Seeing the real David in person is unforgettable. This masterpiece is even more impressive up close!
Stroll across Ponte Vecchio: This medieval bridge, lined with gold and jewelry shops, is one of Florence’s most photographed spots.

Get lost in the Oltrarno District: Cross the river to this charming, less touristy area, full of local artisan shops, cafés and hidden gems.
Day trips
Pisa (1 hour by train): Famous for its Leaning Tower, Pisa is a must-visit. Stroll around the Piazza dei Miracoli, visit the Duomo and Baptistery and enjoy the charming streets along the Arno River.
Siena (1.5 hours by bus/train): A stunning medieval city with the Piazza del Campo, home to the famous Palio horse race. Don’t miss the Siena Cathedral, one of Italy’s most beautiful churches.
San Gimignano (1 hour by car/bus): A UNESCO-listed town known for its medieval towers, charming streets and world-famous gelato at Gelateria Dondoli.4. Cinque Terre (2.5 hours by train)
A bit further, but worth it! These five picturesque coastal villages offer hiking, breathtaking views and fresh seafood.
Lucca (1.5 hours by train): This hidden gem has well-preserved Renaissance walls, cobblestone streets and a laid-back vibe. Rent a bike and cycle around the city walls!
Chianti Wine Region (45 minutes by car/bus): Perfect for wine lovers! Visit vineyards, sip Chianti Classico and enjoy scenic countryside views.
Bologna (35 minutes by train): Italy’s foodie capital, known for tortellini, tagliatelle al ragù (Bolognese), and mortadella. Explore its medieval towers and historic university.
Venice (2 hours by high-speed train): A bit ambitious for a day trip, but possible! Wander the canals, visit St. Mark’s Basilica and take a gondola ride before heading back to Florence.

Tratoria ZaZa: This location is best for dinner or lunch, and a reservation is needed. A beloved eatery famous for its delicious Tuscan dishes, flavorful truffle pasta and cozy yet lively atmosphere, making it a must-visit for both locals and tourists.
Dinner
Osteria Pastella: This restaurant is best for dinner and a reservation is needed. This restaurant is known for its mouthwatering handmade pasta, tableside truffle dishes and the famous cheese wheel fettuccine. They offer a delicious and authentic Tuscan dining experience.
Conquinarius Bistro: A cozy, wine-focused restaurant. It is known for its delicious homemade pastas, fresh burrata dishes and excellent wine pairings, offering a warm and intimate dining experience.
La Cupola: An elegant restaurant inside the Grand Hotel Baglioni, offering a refined dining experience with gourmet Tuscan cuisine and stunning panoramic views of the city’s skyline...the perfect place to try the famous Florentine steak. A reservation is needed.
Osteria dell'Oca: A wonderful traditional trattoria known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. They have generous portions and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel like a local.
