Things to do in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta Zoo (Zoológico de Vallarta) – Mismaloya: A lush, jungle-style zoo where you can hand-feed giraffes, zebras and monkeys. It’s rustic and hilly (wear comfy shoes!), but the close-up encounters are unforgettable. You can even feed a hippo — yes, really!

Cora Crocodile Sanctuary: A hidden gem focused on preserving wild crocodiles and educating visitors. Run by a passionate local family, you’ll spot crocs in mangrove habitats, meet local reptiles and maybe even hold a baby croc (ethically and safely).

Vallarta Botanical Gardens – Cabo Corrientes (30 mins south): One of the most magical places for families. Kids can roam flower trails, splash in a jungle river and chase butterflies. There’s a beautiful restaurant on-site and even a mini vanilla plantation to explore.

The Malecón – Downtown Puerto Vallarta: A classic, always kid-friendly stroll with ocean views, pirate sand art, performers, bronze sculptures and the famous “Puerto Vallarta” letters.

Boat day: Boca de Tomatlán to Yelapa

Catch a panga (water taxi) south to Yelapa, a relaxed beach town you can only reach by boat. The ride is scenic and thrilling — think cliffs, pelicans and sea spray.

Places to eat & drink in Puerto Vallarta

El Dorado Beach Club – Los Muertos Beach: Beach loungers, smoothies and shrimp tacos with your toes in the sand. Kids can play while adults enjoy cocktails and ocean views.

La Palapa – Los Muertos Beach: A little more upscale but still family-welcoming, especially for breakfast or early dinners. Fresh juice, pancakes and an unbeatable beachfront setting.

No Se Nada Pizza – Centro: Funky little pizza spot with a relaxed vibe and big slices. The dough is house-made, and they offer creative toppings and sodas in glass bottles — always a kid favorite.

La Michoacana – Various Locations: Perfect for a quick treat — creamy paletas, colorful ice creams and fun flavors like bubblegum or mango with chile.

A Page in the Sun – Romantic Zone: Book café with sandwiches, smoothies and a mellow vibe. Great pit stop for refueling and reading between adventures.

Need to know

Puerto Vallarta is a reminder that traveling with kids can be full of wonder. Between the jungle trails, boat rides and taco feasts, you’ll leave with full hearts (and sandy shoes).
