Day 1: Arrive in Split

A rocky beach with waves coming onto the shore at sunset.

You’ll probably arrive in Split in the afternoon. Check into your hotel and kick things off with a taste of classic Croatian cuisine at Konoba Matejuska, or share a pizza at Pizzeria Galija, a popular spot with both locals and tourists — remember, Italy is just across the Adriatic! Spend the rest of the day wandering around the old town of Split or relax by the hotel pool or a local beach — whatever fits your arrival-day style.

Day 2: Explore Split

Two figures in historical attire beside an ancient wall with arches under a sunset sky,

Spend the day exploring the old town, which is built within the walls of Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For views over the city and the Adriatic, climb the steps of the Belltower at the Cathedral of St. Dominus or walk the path up Marjan Hill just west of the old town. Stroll along the same cobbled streets that Roman emperors once walked and marvel at the grand architecture, including the Peristyle, a central square that still buzzes with life today. In fact, the old town remains a thriving hub of local city life — stop for a cold drink on an outdoor terrace and explore new and trendy shops that line the streets.

For a fascinating look at the works of a Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, check out the Mestrovic Gallery, housed in the artist’s former residence on beautiful grounds. End the day watching the sunset from the waterfront promenade, then enjoy a modern take on Dalmatian cuisine at Šug.

Days 3 & 4: Travel to Bol, Stari Grad or Hvar Town and spend a day or two exploring!

A picturesque view of a coastal town, with boats gently bobbing on the water and quaint buildings under the expansive blue sky.

From Split, you have plenty of options for your next stop.

On Brac Island, you can visit Bol, whose crown jewel is Zlatni Rat, a unique beach famous for its dramatic horn-shaped curve. Imagine clear turquoise waters lapping at the shore, perfect for swimming, windsurfing or simply soaking up the sun on the soft pebbles. Bol’s old town, just off the waterfront, offers cobbled streets winding past traditional stone houses adorned with red-tiled roofs. Explore the Dominican Monastery, a historic landmark, or discover hidden squares adorned with fountains and brimming with local charm.

On Hvar Island, you can explore the buzzy, glamorous Hvar Town. Just off the glittering harbor, luxury boutiques line cobbled streets, showcasing designer labels alongside local crafts. Upscale restaurants cater to discerning palates, offering culinary experiences that blend tradition with modern flair. For dinner, enjoy traditional Dalmatian cuisine with a contemporary twist at Giaxa, or go for the ultimate luxurious Hvar dining experience at Gariful. Once the sun goes down, you can wind the evening away with a romantic cocktail overlooking the harbor or dance the night away under the stars. From Hvar Town, you can also take a chartered tour of the Pakleni Islands, an archipelago of tiny islands where you can discover hidden coves with pristine beaches, perfect for a day of swimming, sunbathing or snorkeling in crystal-clear waters.

Stari Grad, also on Hvar Island, is one of the oldest towns in Europe with roots dating back to ancient Greece. The town offers a unique blend of history, charm and natural beauty. It is a bit quieter and more relaxed than Hvar Town, and you can take advantage of the calm to delve into the historical roots of the town. Stari Grad is surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, offering excellent opportunities to sample local varietals as well as scenic hikes and bike rides. For dinner, make reservations at the restaurant at Maslina Resort for excellent Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on locally sourced produce.

All of these stops are accessible from Split by public ferry/catamaran or private water taxi/charter. From Split to Bol, there are up to five ferries per day and the journey takes about an hour. From Split to Hvar Town, there are up to 20 ferries per day and the journey takes about two hours. From Split to Stari Grad, there are up to six ferries per day and the journey takes about two hours.

Days 5 & 6: Travel to and explore Korčula

A charming cobblestone street lined with historic stone buildings and balconies, some adorned with flowers, under a clear blue sky.

From Bol or Hvar Town, you can catch a ferry to Korcula. If you’re staying in Stari Grad, it’s best to take a taxi to Hvar Town port to catch the ferry to Korcula. The ferry ride takes about an hour and a half from Hvar Town and about two and a half hours from Bol.

The Old Town of Korčula on Korčula island is a fascinating walled city that carries the nickname “Little Dubrovnik.” Korčula boasts a rich cultural heritage. Catch a performance of moreska, a traditional sword dance with roots dating back to the 15th century. Wander through art galleries showcasing local talent or delve into the island's history at the Korčula Town Museum. Stop for a sweet and satisfying afternoon snack at Aurora Sweets.

Korčula also offers opportunities for guided bike tours through the island’s vineyards, where you can sample the unique and delicious white wine grk. You can catch a water taxi from the harbor to explore nearby pine-shaded islands and sparkling beaches. In the evening, take a short taxi ride to Konoba Mate in Pupnat, a small family-run restaurant showcasing the best of the island’s cuisine.

Days 6 & 7: Travel to and explore Dubrovnik

A fortified coastline with a stone wall and hillside buildings, under sunlight reflecting off the water.

From the port in Korčula Old Town, you can take a ferry/catamaran to Dubrovnik. The route runs up to seven ferries per day and the trip takes about two to two and a half hours.

Dubrovnik, nicknamed the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is one of the most popular destinations in Croatia, and for good reason. From the walled old town perched on dramatic cliffs overlooking the Adriatic, to the many local swimming spots and beaches, to the red-tiled roofs cascading down the hillside to meet the coast, it’s easy to fall under Dubrovnik’s spell. Walk the walls of the old town, which have guarded the town for centuries — it’s best to go early in the morning to avoid both the crowds and the afternoon heat! Grab a drink with a fantastic view from the walls themselves at Caffe on the Wall. "Game of Thrones" fans will want to make time to explore Fort Lovrijenac, also known as King’s Landing.

If you need a break from all the majesty and history, step outside the old town to the Love Stories Museum, a heartwarming collection of exhibits dedicated to long-lasting marriages, childhood sweethearts, the enduring bond between family members and even the love for pets. For a refreshing swim with views of the old town, head to Banje Beach, just a stone’s throw from the walls themselves. You can also pick one of several small coves at the base of the city — Dance Beach or Beach Sulic are just a short walk away.

For a delicious and portable afternoon snack, visit Holy Burek, or for something a bit cooler, Peppino’s Gelato — both are located in the old town. For an excellent meal with a view, take the cable car up Mount Srd to Panorama Restaurant. D’vino Wine Bar in the old town offers a great opportunity to try several Croatian wines with flights and wines by the glass.

Dubrovnik also serves as a great base to explore other nearby islands, including Mljet, a national park with stunning scenery, or Lokrum, a car-free island known for its beaches and natural beauty (and wild peacocks!).

Departure

A tranquil twilight scene with a crescent moon hovering over a silhouetted landscape and a lit-up town.

If your return flight leaves from Split, you can take the ferry/catamaran back to Split from Dubrovnik. There are up to five ferries that depart per day, and the journey takes about five hours — a great opportunity to grab a window seat, sit back and reminisce on your fabulous week in Croatia.

Need to know

Of course, you can make this itinerary your own by extending the time you spend in any particular town or island! In the high season, more ferry routes will run per day than in early spring or late fall — just be sure to check the timetables before you go. It’s easy to book tickets online and best to do so ahead of time during the busy season. There are two major ferry companies in Croatia, Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka. If you prefer to book private charters or water taxis, there are multiple options available.
