Curator’s statement
The Azores felt like a dream: lush, volcanic, and wildly untouched. From watching surfers at golden hour on Praia do Monte Verde, to sipping green tea straight from the source at Gorreana, to hiking the absolutely stunning landscape of Sete Cidades, every moment felt grounded in nature and simplicity. I fell in love with the rhythm of the island: slow mornings, long hikes, garden dinners, and quiet nights under the stars. São Miguel is a place that invites you to breathe deeper, explore slower, and savor everything.

Things to do on São Miguel

Hike or drive the Lagoon of the Seven Cities Loop Trail
This scenic trail loops around the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, offering panoramic views of volcanic peaks, lush valleys, and turquoise waters. Don’t miss Miradouro da Lagoa de Santiago, one of the most breathtaking overlooks along the way. This full loop trail clocks in at about 12.5–13 miles and circles the iconic crater lakes of Sete Cidades, Lagoa Azul, and Lagoa Verde, offering nonstop panoramic views of lush valleys, volcanic cliffs, and vivid blue-green waters. It’s a stunning but long hike. If you’re short on time (or energy), you can drive between key viewpoints, like Miradouro da Lagoa de Santiago, Miradouro da Vista do Rei, and Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, and then opt for a shorter three- to five-mile walk along the crater rim to still soak up the scenery without committing to the full loop.
Watch the surfers at Praia do Monte Verde
Grab a blanket and a local beer and settle in at sunset to watch surfers ride the glassy waves on this black-sand beach near Ribeira Grande.
Say hi to the island’s free-roaming cows
You’ll spot them everywhere—from coastal cliffs to mountain pastures—grazing peacefully with front-row views of the Atlantic. It’s a charming part of daily life on São Miguel.
Wander through Gorreana Tea Plantation
Sip green or black tea straight from the source while walking through tea rows that stretch toward the sea. The plantation has been family run since 1883.
Swim in the thermal ocean pool at Ponta da Ferraria
A lava-rock cove where volcanic hot springs bubble up into the Atlantic—go at low tide for the warmest soak.
Soak in the mineral-rich waters at Terra Nostra Park
Located in Furnas, this iconic orange-hued thermal pool sits in the middle of a botanical wonderland.
Have dinner at MôMô by Sensi
One of the island’s best meals. Expect seasonal Azorean ingredients, dreamy interiors, and a view of the ocean that doesn’t quit.
Enjoy a wine tasting at Wine & Art 1001 Garrafas
A cozy, design-forward wine bar in Ponta Delgada pouring standout Azorean and Portuguese wines by the glass.
Explore Ponta Delgada’s creative scene
The capital is full of character. Stroll mosaic-tiled streets, pop into local galleries, and sip gin cocktails at Louvre Michaelense Bistro.
Catch the sunset from Miradouro da Boca do Inferno
A must-visit viewpoint with sweeping views of Lagoa Azul, Lagoa Verde, and the volcanic cliffs that surround Sete Cidades.

Need to know
Rent a car: It’s the best (and often only) way to explore the island’s remote hot springs, crater lakes, surf beaches, and scenic viewpoints on your own time.
Carry some cash: While most places take cards, some smaller local spots—especially in rural areas—are cash-only. A few euros can go a long way for pastries, market snacks, or tips.
Go off the beaten path: Don’t be afraid to take that narrow road or follow a hand-painted sign—some of the most magical moments come from unplanned stops, hidden miradouros (viewpoints), and tiny village cafés.
Pack for microclimates: São Miguel can go from sunny to misty to downpour in the span of an hour. Bring layers and a light rain jacket so you’re always ready to adventure.
Mind the tides: If you’re planning to swim at spots like Ferraria or go surfing, check the tide times. Conditions can shift quickly and dramatically depending on the hour.
