Curator’s statement

Ever wondered what the French art de vivre is all about? To me, a Parisian girl, it's my beloved way of life. It's about savoring every moment, even in the middle of a busy day. Whether it's lingering on a terrace with a café crème and croissant, indulging in people-watching, enjoying a long meal with friends or strolling along the Seine. It’s about appreciating elegance in the everyday and taking the time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. And let’s be real — that’s something that even the Eiffel Tower can’t beat in the worldwide competition of the best things to experience in Paris.

Things to do in Paris

Cafés and bistros: The beating heart of Paris

You can experience the French art de vivre anywhere in France, but in Paris, there’s a certain je ne sais quoi that makes it unique. Maybe it’s the cafés and bistros that add to the magic? Probably! Their zinc counters, wooden tables and iconic woven rattan chairs — a signature of Parisian terraces — witness the daily life of the city.

That said, not all cafés are created equal. Many near major landmarks — like those around Notre Dame or on Place du Tertre in Montmartre — are avoided by locals for a reason: overpriced, subpar food and uninspired wine. Instead, just a few steps away, you’ll find authentic spots where Parisians actually go.

Follow me — your Parisian bestie (and local Travel Advisor)—to experience the true art de vivre while exploring iconic Parisian sights. Because yes, of course, you want to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle — pure magic!

Places to eat & drink in Paris

Where to experience the French Art de Vivre in Paris

  • Near the Eiffel Tower: A taste of authentic Paris
Strolling near the Iron Lady? Escape the tourist-filled brasseries and head to Rue Cler, a charming market street packed with boulangeries, fromageries and cozy cafés. From there, turn onto Rue de l'Université and stop at Bar du Central for a café or a glass of wine (depending on the time of day, of course). Sit on the tiny terrace and look to your left — Miss Eiffel is watching over you. The perfect spot!

  • Around Notre Dame: Literary Paris & Riverside Charm
A visit to Notre Dame isn’t complete without a slow walk along the Seine. Stop at the bouquinistes' stalls for vintage books and old prints (if you’re looking for special souvenirs, this is the place).

For an authentic break, skip the generic cafés and grab a seat at Le Flore en l'Île on Île Saint-Louis. Here, you can enjoy some of the best ice cream in Paris (Berthillon, of course) or maybe a crêpe, with a view of Notre Dame, please!

  • Montmartre: Bohemian Vibes & Rooftop Views
In the artistic heart of Paris, visit Place du Tertre for its many painters — but avoid the cafés there and seek out true Parisian gems instead:

-Le Relais de la Butte: Stunning views over Paris, perfect for a morning coffee or an evening apéro.
-Le Vrai Paris: A quintessential Montmartre café with classic décor and a lively ambiance. The name says it all!
-Terrass’ Hotel Rooftop: A stylish drink spot with one of the best panoramic views of Paris. (And maybe a quick detour to the hotel’s Nuxe spa before apéro?)
-Pink Mamma: If there’s one Instagram-famous restaurant worth visiting, this is it. Gorgeous interiors, a lively atmosphere and delicious Italian food.

  • Near the Louvre: Skip the Tourist Traps, Opt for Elegance
While Café Nemours is famous for its terrace, it’s often overpriced and crowded. Instead, try L'Officine du Louvre for an elegant tea time under a stunning glass roof. Stepping inside feels like traveling back to the 19th century.

You’ve probably heard of Angelina — is it worth queuing to get in? (They don’t take reservations.) My answer? A huge yes, if you’re looking for the best hot chocolate ever.

And in summer, I love indulging in dinner on the stunning terrace of Loulou, right at the foot of the Louvre, in the heart of the Tuileries Garden, with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. What else?

  • Opéra & Les Grands Magasins: Classic Elegance & Stunning Views
If there’s one place I always recommend, it’s Opéra Garnier. Trust me, stepping into the grand hall will take your breath away! There’s something mysterious about it — maybe the dim lights, the lavish décor or the lingering tales of the Phantom of the Opera.

After your visit, the iconic Café de la Paix is the perfect place to unwind before heading to Galeries Lafayette for some shopping (because yes, shopping is part of the French art de vivre).

  • Saint-Germain-des-Prés: The Posh Intellectual’s Retreat
This legendary Left Bank neighborhood is home to centuries of literary and artistic history. Start with Le Procope, the oldest café in Paris, once frequented by Voltaire and Rousseau. But if I may, the most charming spot is actually its neighboring Brasserie des Près, tucked away in the cobblestoned Cour du Commerce Saint-André. Their croque-monsieur? To die for!

Café de Flore & Les Deux Magots remain classic, but if you want to skip the queue, grab breakfast at Bonaparte, just next door — just as good, no waiting time.

And of course, no visit to Saint Germain (or Paris!) is complete without a stroll through the Jardin du Luxembourg. Stop by the gorgeous Fontaine de Médicis — and if you go early in the morning, you’ll have the park all to yourself.

Final tips for experiencing the true Art de Vivre

  • Take your time: Meals and coffee breaks are not rushed in Paris. A two-hour lunch? Totally normal. Savor the moment!

  • Order like a Parisian: A simple “café” is an espresso. If you want an Americano, ask for a “café allongé.” More in the mood for a latte? Go for a “café crème.”

  • Respect the rhythm: Avoid peak hours for a quieter experience. Mornings are ideal. (If you’re a runner like me, jogging at dawn around the Champs de Mars for a face-to-face with the Eiffel Tower is a magical experience.)

  • Be present: Put your phone away, enjoy the atmosphere and embrace the art of flâner (wandering aimlessly) — a true Parisian skill.

And that’s it — you’re now ready to experience the true beauty of Paris! By embracing the French art de vivre, you won’t just see Paris, you’ll feel it. So take a seat, sip your espresso and let the city work its magic. With the Eiffel Tower sparkling in the distance (because let’s be honest, you can never get enough of that show).
