Advisor - Just Take the Trip: 5 Days in Okinawa
Curator’s statement

Okinawa is Japan’s hidden island escape, blending centuries-old traditions with stunning ocean views and a laid-back rhythm. What makes it truly special is how seamlessly it weaves cultural depth with natural beauty, from sacred sites to dramatic coastlines. My experience here felt both enriching and restorative. It’s a destination that surprises you in the most beautiful ways.

Things to do in Okinawa, Japan

Traditional Japanese kimono experience - Okinawa World

Experience traditional Ryukyu culture at Okinawa World

Step into Okinawa’s heritage with a visit to Ryukyu Village, where you can experience traditional architecture, crafts, and performances. One of the most memorable moments is being dressed in a traditional kimono: an intricate, hands-on process that offers a deeper appreciation for the culture.

Explore Gyokusendo Cave

This massive limestone cave is one of the most impressive natural wonders in Okinawa. Walking through its vast, cathedral-like formations is both humbling and awe-inspiring.

Try a fish pedicure

For something a little unexpected, dip your feet into a fish spa and let tiny fish gently exfoliate your skin. It’s a unique (and slightly ticklish!) experience that’s both fun and memorable.

Visit the Habu Sake Distillery

Located within Okinawa World, this distillery offers a fascinating look at habu sake, a traditional Okinawan liquor made with a venomous snake. It’s equal parts cultural insight and conversation starter.

Churaumi Aquarium

One of the best aquariums in the world, Churaumi is home to massive whale sharks and stunning marine exhibits. The scale and design make it an unforgettable stop for all ages.

Cape Chinen

Known for its peaceful atmosphere and sweeping ocean views, Cape Chinen is the perfect place to pause and take in Okinawa’s natural beauty. It feels untouched and serene compared to more crowded viewpoints.

Kouri Ocean Tower Experience

Ride self-driving golf carts up to the tower while taking in incredible coastal scenery along the way. At the top, explore the Shell Museum, enjoy a relaxed lunch, and soak in panoramic views of the iconic Kouri Bridge and turquoise waters.

Scenic coastal drives

Some of Okinawa’s best moments happen on the road, with endless stretches of coastline and brilliant blue water. Plan time to simply drive, stop, and take it all in.

Nakijin Gusuku Ruins

These UNESCO-listed castle ruins offer a glimpse into Okinawa’s Ryukyu Kingdom history. The expansive stone walls and elevated views create a striking and peaceful setting.

Sefa Utaki Sacred Site

One of Okinawa’s most important spiritual sites, Sefa Utaki is a place of quiet reverence surrounded by nature. Walking through the pathways feels both grounding and deeply meaningful.

Places to eat & drink in Okinawa, Japan

Danbo Ramen in Naha

Naha (city base and arrival area)

  • Danbo Ramen: A standout dining experience in Naha, Danbo delivers a more traditional and customizable ramen experience that feels both authentic and memorable. It’s an easy, reliable choice after arrival or a full day of exploring the city.

  • Ukishima Garden: For a more elevated experience in Naha, this spot offers beautifully presented Okinawan-inspired cuisine with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. It’s a great option when you’re looking for something more refined without losing the local feel.

  • CoCo Ichibanya Curry House: A casual, easy option found throughout Naha and beyond, CoCo Ichibanya is a popular introduction to Japanese curry. It’s not a standout meal, but it’s convenient and gives you a taste of a local favorite.

Central Okinawa (on the way to Okinawa World and southern sites)

  • Yakiniku (Japanese BBQ experience): You’ll find great yakiniku options throughout central Okinawa, making it an ideal stop after visiting Okinawa World or nearby cultural sites. Grilling your own meats at the table makes this a fun, interactive dining experience, perfect for groups.

Northern Okinawa (Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island, and scenic drives)

  • Restaurant L LOTA (Kouri Island area): A perfect lunch stop when visiting Kouri Ocean Tower, offering elevated dishes with stunning ocean views. It’s a more polished experience that pairs beautifully with a scenic day in northern Okinawa.

  • On the Beach Café: A relaxed, beachfront option that’s ideal during a day of coastal exploring. The setting is the highlight here, perfect for slowing down and soaking in the views between stops.

Island-wide must try

Blue Seal Ice Cream: You’ll see Blue Seal locations across the island, making it an easy and fun stop wherever you are. Known for its tropical flavors and nostalgic charm, it’s a must-try Okinawan treat.

Need to know

Okinawa has a strong U.S. military presence, and you’ll notice that influence woven throughout the island in interesting ways. From familiar restaurants to American-style neighborhoods, it creates a unique blend of cultures that feels very different from mainland Japan.

One of the best places to experience this is American Village, which has a fun, almost nostalgic energy. It’s the go-to spot for casual nightlife: think lively restaurants, karaoke, shopping, and even a cat café if you’re up for something a little quirky.

Getting around is surprisingly easy. Renting a car is the best way to explore, and while you’ll be driving on the left side of the road, the infrastructure is great and very manageable. It also makes Okinawa a more budget-friendly destination than you might expect.

And don’t skip Aeon Mall...it’s massive, convenient, and honestly kind of impressive. It’s the perfect place to grab anything you forgot, pick up souvenirs, or just enjoy a little air-conditioned break.

What I loved most about Okinawa is the balance. You get this beautiful, subtropical island with incredible coastline views but with the ease and accessibility of a well-developed city. It’s relaxed, easy, and unexpectedly diverse in all the best ways.
