Advisor - A Soulful Journey Through Canyons, Dunes & Coastal Rituals in Oman
Curator’s statement

Oman is a rare sanctuary where ancient heritage meets the luxury of silence. Its diverse landscapes—from the emerald mists of Salalah to the copper dunes of the desert—provide the perfect backdrop for a restorative "decision detox." With a welcoming local culture, authentic hospitality, and a surprisingly seamless infrastructure for road trips, it is my favorite destination for travelers seeking a slow, purposeful escape.

Things to do in Oman

Nizwa Fort

  • Sunrise hike at Jebel Shams: Stand at the edge of the "Grand Canyon of Arabia" for a perspective-shifting experience. The rugged trails offer a quiet altitude shift that is especially powerful.

  • A midnight desert ritual: Spend a night in the Wahiba Sands at a property like Arabian Nights Resort. The absence of digital noise combined with live Omani music by an open fire creates a profound emotional reset.

  • Nizwa Friday goat auction: Arrive early at the Nizwa local market to witness a centuries-old community ritual. It is a vibrant, rhythmic display of Omani heritage that feels completely untouched by modern tourism.

  • Wildlife encounters in Sur: Experience the gentle side of the coast by searching for dolphins by boat at sunrise. At night, head to the Ras Al Jinz sanctuary to witness the sacred, quiet ritual of baby green turtles hatching under the stars.

  • The Royal Opera House Muscat: Visit this architectural masterpiece to see how Omani tradition blends with modern elegance. The intricate woodwork and marble craftsmanship reflect the country's deep commitment to the arts.

  • Coastal relaxation at Shangri-La: Use a day pass to access the secluded beaches of Barr Al Jissah. It’s an ideal way to balance rugged adventure with refined relaxation and world-class service.

  • The tropical escape of Salalah: Visit during the Khareef (monsoon) season to see the desert turn into a lush, green paradise. The mist-covered mountains and frankincense trees offer a sensory experience unlike anywhere else in the Middle East.

Places to eat & drink in Oman

Omani breakfast in Nizwa

  • Al Tanoor (Shangri-La Muscat): For a truly special evening, enjoy a five-course dinner that showcases the genealogy of Omani spices. The elegant setting and refined flavors make it a highlight for celebrating a personal milestone.

  • Traditional Omani kitchens: Seek out local spots serving shuwa—slow-cooked lamb prepared in an underground oven. It is the ultimate heritage meal, representing the communal spirit of Omani hospitality.

  • Yemeni and Saudi specialties: Oman’s location makes it a hub for regional flavors. Don't miss the chance to try mandi or kabsa in local restaurants, where the focus is on fragrant rice and tender, spiced meats.

  • Lebanese mezze by the sea: Muscat offers incredible Levantine dining options. Sharing a variety of fresh mezze while looking over the Gulf of Oman is a perfect "slow food" experience.

  • Nizwa market snacks: While at the market, try fresh Omani halwa paired with bitter cardamom coffee. This traditional pairing is the sensory signature of Omani welcome rituals.

Need to know

If you are staying in Muscat but want a change of pace, I highly recommend booking a day pass at a luxury resort. It’s an excellent way to enjoy high-end beach amenities, spa facilities, and a "decision detox" environment without moving hotels. Additionally, Oman is best explored by renting a 4x4 car; the roads are excellent, and the freedom to drive into the mountains or desert at your own pace is essential for an authentic experience.
