Things to do

Park City's peaks and valleys offer something for everyone after working hard in Wyoming

  • Fly into SLC Airport and drive the scenic way to Kemmerer, Wyoming; stop by the Great Salt Lake, the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, or Bear Lake.

  • Explore Kemmerer's historic downtown, including the original (still operating!) JCPenney location and many gem, mineral, and fossil stores.

  • Visit Fossil Butte National Monument to learn about the Green River Formation, understand the area's fossils, and start to take in the region's beauty.

  • Dig! Pick one of the many available fossil digs, grab a hammer, and get to work!

  • If you have time, drive east to the Blue Forest and continue your rockhounding adventure by searching for petrified wood.

  • Once the manual labor is over, make your way to Park City, where you can keep the adventure going by hiking, mountain biking, or doing other outdoor activities. Alternatively, switch gears and put your feet up, or treat yourself to the town's many luxury offerings, including stunning resorts, high-end shopping, holistic spas, and fine dining.

Places to eat & drink

  • Rosie's Pizza in Diamondville, WY: In a small town, a friendly joint with tasty pizza is all you need. Great pre-quarry fuel!

  • Opera House Store in Kemmerer, WY: A great general store for snacks and takeaway coffees or a little something more if your appetite is there.

  • Five5eeds in Park City, UT: Fresh, local brunch spot with everything from healthy options to tempting treats.

  • Twisted Fern in Park City, UT: An unassuming strip mall spot serving up delicious, creative new American food with very friendly service.

  • Handle in Park City, UT: A classic American restaurant offering elevated food in a downtown Park City location.

Need to know

There are many fossil-digging operators in Southwest Wyoming—let me help you figure out which is best!

I love doing this as a shoulder-season trip. Not only are temperatures more comfortable for outdoor activities, but Park City resorts also have great deals.
